Laptops aren't meant for gaming, buy a desktop instead...

of course... although as I said, I suspect anyone on this part of the forum is probably sold on the idea of a gaming laptop already.

The thread was looking a bit like a load of people congratulating each other on their insight of how well gaming laptops work...

I think some people are confusing the idea that laptops can be used for gaming with the idea that laptops are better than desktops for gaming.

I will say that my Dell Inspiron 15R is rubbish for gaming.
i7 3620 (I think), 8GB RAM, AMD 7730M graphics, 1TB HDD, 15" 1080p screen.
Useless and a complete waste of money. Struggles to do desktop tasks like web browsing at a decent speed.

No, it was about fighting against the perception that a desktop is always a better gaming solution than a laptop whenever the latter is suggested. But I can see how the more light-minded would see it as congratulatory back-slapping.

Yeah sure... a quad core ivy bridge struggles to do web browsing at decent speeds... *rolls eyes to the heavens*. :D

More like there is a config, driver or installation issue. ;)

Might have been a slight exaggeration but a number of times Chrome just stops responding and takes ages to load. Generally it just feel unresponsive compared to the rig in my sig.

But when I try playing Guild Wars 2 at 720p with everything set to lowest setting I get around 25fps.
So I think it's apparent that a 2GB 7730M is in no way designed for gaming (and I question the point of it being there really, I'm sure the Intel graphics can do desktop stuff fine).
Also the battery life on it is ridiculous. By the time it's turned on and loaded GW2 the battery has used about 25% of its charge.

I'm sure a 7970M would do a better job though. I bought this laptop as I wanted something light and portable. It is neither light nor portable and I can't not recommend it strongly enough.

The 7730M is a lower-end gaming part, of course it isn't going to run the latest games at good detail settings, but then again I don't think the thread title was "My laptop with a crappy GPU isn't meant for gaming, buy a desktop instead". :p

As for the batter... it will be a 6-cell, so yes, during gaming it won't last loing at all. All this is to be expected though, and you generally do not use gaming desktops for gaming for long periods without a power cord.

The Chrome unresponsiveness happens also on my desktop, it's a software issue not a hardware one.

he should try gaming with a 5650M, 1GB now that was painful for Metro 2033 and witcher 2. In fact unplayable.

Gaming on laptop has come a long way, I like gaming on a laptop as I said before a 7970 or 680M isn't that far behind a comparable desktop GPU now.

Still, given half a chance, I must admit, I'd be tempted back to desktop if it was a triple screen, water cooled SLI monster that destroyed all games at 100fps..

Sadly, I have a family... lol

2012 High end laptop cards are not like anything that has come before, they truly have moved upto desktop speed with the nanometer drop.

BTW I have to agree on the best single thing about a laptop that has been mentioned on this thread a few times and on pretty much all gaming laptop threads in the history of time:

They help you maintain a healthy relationship with your other half and in some cases a family whilst still being able to game and tweak. A decent gaming laptop is very useful for people who are a bit older and no longer can justify living in a dark airless bedroom / atick / basement after a long days work further more degrading the time spent with loved ones.

In my case I can still game and be on the couch whilst the missus is watching tv / film and then if she decided to do a bit of cooking one night i have the laptop on the kitchen table and maintain a conversation whilst fragging people online.

The whole world isnt going portable for nothing!

<big list with 7730M at the bottom>.

Well, that explains that then. Still the other option was an Nvidia 625M or something like that.
Wasn't bought as a gaming laptop, I wanted it to be portable, which it isn't. Was hoping the 7730M would have a little more to offer than it did though. Sort of makes me wonder what the point of having it at all is, can't game and Intel will cover desktop stuff...

Its in Prototype stage but it will probably be the next big thing for all the Boutique laptop manufacturers to add to their laptops . :D

Now all we need is boutique laptop makers to think about the case design as well.

While Clevo might be significantly better priced, MSI, Alienware and Asus actually appear to have put some effort into the design of the outside, rather than just using a chassis that looks like a 10+ year old laptop with a new screen.

One of the reasons quoted by mac fans for chosing a mac over a PC is that the hardware looks better... if they can become as popular as they did without bothering to ensure that ALL the software people wanted was available, then think what laptop manufacturers could achieve if they thought about this too.

Oh, and easy upgrades would be a good idea too. If manufacturers start making laptop GPUs available, laptop cooling solutions upgradable, laptop innards accessible without hours of unscrewing bits of plastic from each other etc then there would be no need for desktop units ever again...

Honestly if I could pick and choose the components in a laptop the way I want to then I'd be happy to go for it. Unfortunately that isn't the case almost ever, the customisation options are rubbish in general. Also, given we're on overclockers here.... you'll generally find oc'ing on a desktop easier. So performance will be higher than the baseline stats suggest.

Not saying for a minute that laptop gaming isn't possible, though to be honest I mostly see people saying what the OP was moaning about about 2 posts after a laptop potential buyer has complained that they can't get component x, y or z within the budget they want. Which comes back to the customisation point :)

Realistically anything under a nvidia 650m as mentioned is pointless since the intel HD4000 covers light work and the 650m is just ahead of the 8800GTS/9800GTX/250GTS line of cards.

I agree with you but laptops are only built to last for few years though, also playing games is a bit restrictive due to the proximity of keyboard buttons and sometimes, lower resolution

so i am now looking at buying some a laptop, to replace my ageing desktop, and family needs the space that is currently being taken my desk. It's not ideal but it's a compromise i have to make.

My only concern is the lack of upgrade path with graphics card, requiring a premium on buying the best I can at the moment to last a few more years!

I was extremely skeptical initially, but having done some research and spec comparisons, I think gaming laptops have come a very long way recently.
