I've got a parcel coming which was delivered via EMS (which means Parcelforce in the UK.)

But today I got a phonecall from DHL saying they were delivering a parcel on monday with x amount of taxes to pay. I've never heard of this before. The only thing I can think of is that perhaps the parcel is too big for parcelforce?

The tracking number works on the parcelforce site but not the DHL one too.

did you buy from abroad ie not from the UK or Europe if so you have import duty etc.. to pay.

Yes, TNT do it, DHL do it, etc.

Often they are inflated or wrong. They find any shipment which customs hasn't been to and just slap on a charge without even speaking to customs.

I shipped personal belonging (many of which were orignally from the UK) back to the UK a few months ago. They hit me up for 200 but dropped it once I explained it was personal goods.

If they refused the next step would have been for the proof of customs declaration which they would have had to do (hint: they likely didn't even bother with one).

Err, that's not really how it works!

As someone who has worked in DHL's customs office for 4 years I can say without any shadow of a doubt that what you have said is absolute hourse poo :)
