traffic wardens, your opinion on them

In the beginning there was the motorist, and the traffic warden. For a time, it was good. Then the motorist wanted to park, and there was no parking spaces so the motorist parked illegally. This forced the traffic warden to enforce the law.

The motorist felt he could park the car anywhere he wanted, and seeing how the traffic warden was not a police officer the motorist laughed and drove off. 28 days later, the motorist received a fine through the post. The hate started to grow.

Once the traffic warden heard about the motorist's hate, he too started to become embittered knowing that he was being loathed for just going about his job. But, he tried to be reasonable and forgave the motorist.

Then the jokes started, after that everyone laughed at the traffic warden. They thought he was a joke. But the thick skinned traffic warden was determined to not to be beaten.

Until one day after several rounds of cuts, having to enforce the law through rain or shine, several physical assaults, name calling, threats and someone throwing a bottle of pee at him he finally snapped.

The motorist had turned him into a monster, and if a monster he was perceived to be then a monster he would be. The motorist created his own parking nemesis, but he's just too short sighted to see it.

Incidentally, I took a chance on parking slightly over a double yellow once. Came back to find the warden writing me a ticket. Rolled my eyes at my own stupidity, and said "fair cop, how much do I owe you?". He said, "Since you were honest and reasonable about it, don't worry mate. Just don't do it again."

Traffic wardens. People, doing their job.

this really annoys me too. noticed one in tesco last week. i was hoping they'd put an announcement over the tannoy system, instructing the owner to move it and rightly shaming the ****.

Tesco etc. annoy me they have tonnes of unused disabled spaces and like 5 for people with children, which actually do get used, they should reduce the amount of disabled parking at supermarkets, its ridiculous and is barely used at my local stores.

you're annoyed at the amount of disabled spaces? you're assuming they don't get used and i'm assuming you're basing this on the observation you've made during the (probably) one hour a week total you are there, of which maybe 5 mins is spent in the car park?

I agree that a lack of parent & child spaces can be frustrating, but to increase their numbers at the expense of disabled parking would be a shame.

Dislike them in general. The car park at my work is a multi-storey and I used to pay on my mobile while walking into the office. A few times I forgot to do it straight away and one day I got a ticket with a 7 minute observation time. This was just after 8AM when there were no cars around so it really pee'd me off. With things like this happening and petrol prices going up, I got sick of motoring being a cash cow and decided to move closer to work and now walk there every day.

Personally I would like to see more.

There is a corner near me by a school, double yellows on both sides and there are regularly cars parked there on both sides overnight.

People seem to think these lines are painted for the sake of it. Combine this poor parking with lunatic drivers driving too fast for the conditions and with in effect it being a blind bend (due to the visibility being reduced by the parked cars) I quite regularly nearly have head ons there, if I didn't take account of the poor visibility and over compensate for people going to quick I would certainly have been in a RTC by now.

Agree with this. For many years we've had no traffic wardens in the town I live. Apparently we do now have one, but I've never seen him/her yet. Where I live cars constantly park on corners, double yellow lines, and pretty much anywhere they want, and it makes it extremely dangerous sometimes just crossing the road. I'm surprised there haven't been more accidents.

Add to that the community police officers bimbling round on their bicycles all ignore these idiots who blatantly ignore the road markings.

I'd definitely support more traffic wardens round here. Hell, I'd even do the job myself if they wanted to hire me :)

Some have been ok but met a few that are ****s What's the point in starring it out if you're just going to explain what it is anyway?

I wouldn't mind traffic wardens if they had proper leeway and could exercise their own judgement of the situation. But in their current state when I think of traffic wardens I think of that great Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels scene.

Its not so much the job they do, or the enforcement of the Law.

its the people who do the Job i hate, it takes a certain type to do the job, and they tend to be loner/loser types, or god fearing nigerians with a god complex themselves.

had one traffic warden, square up to me, and call my mother a goat.

it must make sense where he is from

I saw one of those police programmes recently where they were out on the beat and all the policemen were just so aggressive and antagonistic. Complete bullies.

I'd like to hope they aren't all like that! :/

I don't see the issue with them really? If you park were you shouldn't and get a ticket then fair play.

this..I have been driving for 25 years and never had a ticket..or any contact with a traffic warden of any sort

They never seem to be able to exercise any degree of flexibility and most of the ones I've ever had anything to do with don't seem too bright either which doesn't help their image at all.

I was walking along here once and saw no less than 3 traffic wardens (2 on their knees) at the front of a vehicle parkled in the white marked out bay actually with a tape measure trying to work out if it was fully inside the bay or not while the other was arguing with the driver of the vehicle...

y'Know what I really hate that's creeping in more? the tickets with no sticky back so you have to carefully place them on the dashboard (some modern cars the dashboards are fairly sloped) and pray it doesn't fall off as you shut the door / leave the car. My old man was caught out on a really windy day, where it must have blew it onto the floor, got fined, tried to appeal with proof of ticket time purchased but they said no deal.

Okay so i am currently a Traffic Warden and this is my take !

First of all, i notice a lot of people here have said i wish they use common sense, and give some leeway (sp?) but in this current climate its not possible, a lot of companies set people up to see if they are doing their job properly, and nobody wants to do lose their job do they ?

Secondly, you don't really need any kind of brain problem to be one, most people only do it because its an easy job, easy to get into, easy to do and provides good job security, because lets face it, all these idiots who park stupidly over stay there time or whatever keep us in a job. If nobody ever parked wrongly we wouldn't be needed and thus not have a job !

I do know a few traffic wardens who love the arguments though and will purposely wait for people to return just to be a douche, but then you get good and bad people in every kind of job, police, estate agents, etc etc

And the only time a ticket will be issued instantly is when there is a loading ban inplace or people parked in disabled bays, bust stops, taxi ranks etc etc.

Also Observation times vary from district to district, the council who enforces that area are allowed to choose a time they wish to use for certain contraventions.

Where i work, if a car is parked on Double yellow lines, it has to be there for 5 mins before you can issue. pay and display the car has to over stay for 15mins past the expiry time before you can issue, if the car has no ticket you must wait for 15mins.

Now to me that is really resonable, if you can't read the ticket and know wht time your meant to leave by the its your fault.

I would always tell people to speak to a traffic warden politely as well cos if people speak to me nicely explain they are waiting for someone to return i'd generally leave them alone and just let them know if i come back in 10 mins and they still there then i'll have to issue, but if they start getting gobby and rude, i won't mess about cos there is no need for it !

Also please never say how do you sleep at night ? cos i will tell you, with my eyes shut like everyone else !

:D

Guys doing a thankless job, we give them the chance to do it & then moan!

It's not a job that I'd like.
