So for the 1.4 TSI (122ps) in my Golf (SE) the VW website says I should be getting 34.4 ubran and 55.4 extra-urban.

On a journey between London and Bristol (with just me in the car & no luggage) I managed about 35mpg. This was with the cruise control on sitting at almost a constant 75mph for the whole journey. Fuelly seems to agree with the figure coming out the computer.

I consider my driving quite economical. Shift up before 2000rpm and not particularly heavy footed. I checked to make sure all the tyres are pumped up (which they are). What else can I check? How do I go about checking wheel alignment etc...

Also, FWIW, this was bought used from a main dealer last week [2010 with 28000 miles].

You are getting similar to what I was getting, when my car was new. The engine wears in after a while and you should be seeing at least 40mpg on a long run. I did 80 miles on the M1 yesterday afternoon and got about 37.9mpg and that wasn't driving very eco friendly. :o

I once got 40.1 mpg in my 2.0T Golf GTi over a 50 mile run doing 50 mph average speed lol

Just depends on weather conditions, good flow of traffic and minimal throttle application!

It's only a 1.4, I'd try letting it rev a little higher than 2k rpm.
Whilst you won't get near the manufacturers B.S. figures in real use,not making the engine labour (which willl make it use a lot more fuel) could & imo should reap results.

Worth a try. :)

Driving with cruise control on isnt the most fuel efficient way to get around.
The moment you use the turbo on acceleration is when your MPG will really suffer.

I think you're labouring the engine too much when getting up to speed, 2000 rpm is rather low, my 3 litre car can do that but there's a big difference in engines there!

Your doing 75mph between Bristol and London, the rate you accelerate really has little difference and you can't change the gear ratios!

Your fuel consumption will be govered by the air you're shifting at that speed.

How do you expect to meet any fuel consumption figures for a product sold in the UK when you are exceeding the UK speed limit

What petrol?

My car is currently (winter with A/C on most of the time) giving 36mpg with BP ultimate. If I stick 95 RON in it drops to 31mpg on the same run and over the course of a tank.

As said, try it just keepin pace with HGVs or at a push 65-70, fuel economy drops of expotentialy the faster you go over about 50-60mph generally.
Faster economical cruising would generaly need a bigger engine, but then your urban mpg would always suffer, so it depends on what sort of driving you do mostly as to whats most economical.

The only problem with this is that driving at economical speeds on a motorway is painfull! it feels very slow.

I find the urban figure a good guide for mixed driving which includes a fair bit of motorway cruising. :)

Don't these TSI engines prefer higher ron fuel?

I am sure I have read somewhere that they run rough when not on the good stuff.
