Nope, it definitely is, many rangefinder users have one for lenses that aren't included in the standard 28-35-50-75-90-135 frameline set up, the OVF on my Ricoh is exactly like the Sony's too (except it's a lot smaller and is for a 28mm view). There are cheaper 35mm VF options though, this is a Zeiss product so it comes with the Zeiss tax. Even the cheapest external VFs are very bright, so the Zeiss must be amazingly good (still overpriced though!). It might have some parallax correction marks for framelines and AF point though.
 
Bear in mind that the Leica has a built in viewfinder with a rangefinder mechanism as well as a roller coupling for the lens. Leica were the first to bring to market a full frame camera that was smaller than a DSLR (or the smallest full frame digital). Pointing out the size difference between them is a bit pointless really, neither will fit inside a jacket pocket with a normal lens anyway (the Leica will with a collapsible or pancake lens).

Interesting and a shame it say's Sony.... had CZ and Kyocera not given up this would/could have had Contax written on it !!.... Which would have traded better against the likes of Leica etc...... There have been various CZ based compacts and rangefinders of the years... So this could be cracking piece of (expensive) kit.
Interesting to see CZ forming partnerships to still sell there lenses...... I've not forgiven them for giving up with the Contax name.... especially as I found out recently there was MkII N Digital in the pipe line :( ......
 
I really hope this dies a bloody death because at some of those accessory prices Sony really deserve for it fail.

$179.99 for a sodding lens hood? Hmmm :rolleyes:
 
Leica charge more for some of their stuff, and it's about as expensive as the X100/X-Pro accessories, not to mention I know Nikon charge about this amount for some of their hoods (granted the big metal ones for their stupid-sized telephotos).

It's a luxury camera that you buy if you've got (very) deep pockets, not the type of camera you get sold up to in a shop.

EDIT:
Also, Sony have a bad habit of putting their RRP way above actual retail prices... I think it's to stop those of us who can get their discounts getting a significantly cheaper camera as it's a discount off their list price!

Leica released a full frame digital compact years ago, the Leica M9. I don't think these cameras can really be called compact though, non retractable lens means it's not going to fit in many pockets.

Different type of camera though; the RX1 is smaller and uses a fixed lens where as the M9 is obviously larger and is interchangeable. The RX1 is a one of a kind camera, similar to the Fuji X100.
