Hi I bought a cpu off 'that bidding website..' The seller said he was in the U.S and he'll be bringing the item over and if that was ok or if I wanted a refund i'm just curious is a U.S intel cpu identical with the one's over here plus how would the warrenty work in other words shall I keep the item or get a refund..?

The seller is bringing the CPU over from the USA?

That sound like very good service although it does involve a bit of smuggling and tax evasion.

The warranty may also only be valid for a purchaser in the USA.

If its a retail Intel chip the warranty will be fine as its global (except for chips purchased in Australia in which case the is an improved Australia only warranty).

i stand corrected :o :D

2.2 Do I have to pay import duties and/or import VAT on goods sent to me?
Most goods arriving in the UK from outside the EU are liable to any or all of the following taxes:

customs duty
excise duty
import VAT
and must be paid whether:

you purchase the goods or receive them as a gift
the goods are new or used (including antiques)
the goods are for your private use or for re-sale

Be careful with this. I recently got stung on VAT for a mountain bike part that came from Cali. HMRC will get money from you one way or another :p

i got stung recently on some model kits that went over vat worth by a factor of pence so they charged me a admin fee of £8 for the pleasure of me being billed what awesome service they have

Ah yes the infamous Royal Mail/ParcelForce ransom. The charge of £8/£13 for the "administration cost" of their desk monkey to press a single button on their computer...

Also, to be honest I don't think the deliberate delay of the delievery is actually legal, but they do it anyway. Don't we just love it when we receive the ransom letter through the letterbox with the message of "If you want to see your parcel reach your home in one piece, you got 30 days to pay us up or you will never see it again"? :p

surely if iv already paid for it and the seller is posting it when he gets to uk i wont be charged for any duty.

What if someone in the USA came over for a month holiday, bought their PC with them and during the time someone offered them £500 for it? Would that same person then have to send £100 to the TAX office?

Big companies dont bother with paying tax, why should you??

Well they do have rather large legal department....

I guess its more of a dont tell dont pay, if it is being sent as a gift doubt anyone will bother or if handed in person...

If he's sending it from inside the country you will get away with it. Unless the airport has a problem with him bringing a couple hundred pound CPU over with him.
