Just did a sponsored swim for charity. havent swam in 7 years , wow. real eye opener to how unfit i've gotten since i started working 3 years ago. i used to do sports etc every day now its once a fortnight. gained a stone since working but im still a skinny lad.

legs cramped up after half an hour, was half way across pool and both calfs went ouch. flopping like a fish trying to get to side to climb out and stretch it off!

managed to do 40 lengths in 60 mins in 25 metre pool with a 10 min break stretching cramps out.

Think its inspired me to start jogging again! i did start joging every 2 nights got into a real good habit of it then fractured my ankle playing footy and havent done it since.

Anyone else do any activitys lately that made them think right. im going to start doing more!?

When I was doing a lot of exercise and thought I was really in shape, I did the same as you, cramp in the middle of a pool still give me that deep down worry feeling/panic.

As for doing more, visit to the gym the other week nearly killed me....I liked it. give me more!

I used to swim at National level when i was 15-17, was pretty good.

Then i started uni...then it ALL went wrong.

was funny two lads from office came down quickly to watch and they watched me starting swimming then just start squirming in the middle of the pool trying some skulling to get me to edge of pool XD

Pretty much this.

Guess the difference is, I'm now about half way through third year and decided it was time to get back in shape. Whilst I'm still faster than most of the public when in the pool, I'm certainly nowhere near as fit as I used to be. Oh well, there's a plan in place to solve that.

I used to be a national level swimmer when I was 16.. And pretty much haven't touched it until recently. I've been swimming for the past year twice a week during lunch breaks and can now manage 120 lengths in 45 minutes. A typical training session when I was younger would have been 240 lengths over 2 hours so I'm not quite there yet!

The fitness will come back but it'll take determination and a steady routine. It's worth pointing out that water fitness is a very different thing to land fitness. If stamina in the pool is what you're aiming for, jogging won't do much to help that (though it will certainly help your general well-being!)

I was swimming loads until mid year. Nothing special, just dodging harpoons. Found it excellent tbh

I swim every morning and cover 122 Laps (2 lengths) of a 25metre pool (just under 4miles) in 1hour 20mins. I have done this for quite a while and find it really a breeze. The only time I can push myself swimming now is outdoor events in the sea, where a normal mile would normally be covered in 18mins.

Swimming is great for fitness though, although always amazes me how such a little body change in technique, like opening your fingers or slightly changing the angle of your strokes can effect the effort needed and speed gained!

Yeah, small things make a difference. Hardest one for me to adjust to was making a fist, instead of open hand, when doing crawl.

That's pretty ridiculous, nice work.

Recently went for a mile and a half run which I know I use to be able to do in 12 minutes easily, barely made 13.30 and I was knackered afterwards. Going to try and get back to 12.

Indeed, that was the idea.. to make it harder. Not all the time, just a few lengths here and there.

beeen swimming a bit lately, good for my back :p

I want to learn butterfly but it looks so silly when you try to learn it's a bit embarassing ;p

Make sure you get the kick right. It's important.

Then, things to know:
Two kicks to every pull
And head leads hands (head goes into water before the hands, and comes out of the water before the hands)

They tend to be the things people miss, although the head one is much rarer..

What do people think of open fingers verses tightly closed fingers of your hand paddle? (crawl) I find that during endurance events I end up opening my fingers slightly basically just to take some strain off my shoulders. Thought tight closed I find faster.
