Miles per Gallon

BMW always seem to be well ahead of everyone else when it comes to power to fuel consumption ratio. In my experience, BMW engines can be very economical when they need to be, even from the big engines.

From my pre-ED 335i 3.0TT 6 cyl i got 35.3MPG the other day on A roads and dual carriage ways. I was driving conservatively, by accelerating gently, anticipating everything massively in advance and leaving more of a gap between myself and the car in front.

you won't get the manufacturers claimed figures, simple as that really

Not with some cars. BMW's come closest though and Audi's are pretty good.

Check on honest John

42.8 seems to be what most people get.

Whereas a BMW 5 series will return you 49.2 ;)

What car true mpog says you should average 43.3 mpg though so it would appear your car is performing somewhat under expected.

I can get 35mpg in my mr2 turbo cruising at 70 with twice the power of your car, surely something's not right.

Golf GTI 2.0 TSI - 35mpg mixed, and often hit 44mpg on a long run at 70mph.

How did you manage that? 44mpg often?! I call shenanigans. :p

Edit: Sorry, just realised you have the TSI, which is supposed to be better than the TFSi isnt it.

Supposed to be able to get 40mpg on a run, i've managed 32 once, can't average the 30mpg combined at all, 25 is when driving like a saint

Change up later & labour the engine less.

If I change up below 2krpm and slap it into 5th and accelerate in that gear I get worse economy than if I take it to 2.5 or even 3krpm and feather the throttle.

So for the 1.4 TSI (122ps) in my Golf (SE) the VW website says I should be getting 34.4 ubran and 55.4 extra-urban.

On a journey between London and Bristol (with just me in the car & no luggage) I managed about 35mpg. This was with the cruise control on sitting at almost a constant 75mph for the whole journey. Fuelly seems to agree with the figure coming out the computer.

I consider my driving quite economical. Shift up before 2000rpm and not particularly heavy footed. I checked to make sure all the tyres are pumped up (which they are). What else can I check? How do I go about checking wheel alignment etc...

Also, FWIW, this was bought used from a main dealer last week [2010 with 28000 miles].

That can't be right.

I can get at least 40mpg out a Mini Cooper (1.6 NA 120bhp) cruising at 80mph on a similar journey. I would expect the VW to be more economical.

May seem obvious advice but if you have to brake on the motorway and it's not too busy then you're doing it wrong. Every time you brake you're burning petrol unnecessarily because you have used petrol to gain momentum you could have avoided.

Cruise control uses more fuel and so does driving at 75mph.

My old Golf 2.0 GT Sport (diesel turbo) used to be able to get over 70mpg down the motorway driving at 60mph in sixth gear.

Anyway, is there a website which shows you the optimal speed for each car? Been trying to find one for ages but have had no luck.

Cruise control on a level road is perfectly fine, it's when you get to hills etc where it struggles as it can't predict.

Yes the TSI is a slighly different engine than the TFSI. The TSI is chain driven and has lower emissions which also means lower VED.

I've had 42-43 MPG out of my A3 2.0TFSI over my 30 mile commute before.

Though I managed 28 yesterday, I think it's sick.

To the OP. It does seem low for that engine. In my 2.0TFSI Octavia VRS i can get 38/39mpg on a motorway run at 70mph and usually average 29-32mpg on my commute (some traffic,hills,30mph - 60 mph limits), very twisty and up and down.

In my 1.8 Civic that i had before i averaged 40mpg with mixed driving and could get 45mpg+ on a long run.

35mpg on a long run seems low for a 122bhp 1.4 turbo.

I have never seen 42-43mpg as an average for a journey in mine so far. Best i have got is 39mpg which was a long 100 mile + run mostly on the motorway (but also some traffic).

I have averaged 30mpg over my last tank. no motorway driving in that at all. Just my traffic + rally track/hilly B road commute and a few other mixed journeys.

27mpg at constant 70 on long journeys from a 5l supercharged v8 jag. It drops considerable above 70mph though

Most I have achieved is 31mpg but that was at a boring 50mph
