eat donuts for breakfast? pay for your own health care

I'm pretty certain that tobacco causes more harm than a donut.

Let's put this into a scenario; A crazed mad-man kidnaps a kid and yourself and tells you that you must harm the kid using the two methods he will provide you. The two methods are making the kid smoke a single ciggy or have to eat a 12 pack of donuts, fresh from Krispy Kreme comprised of chocolate, strawberry and caramel dreamcakes - warm and (ok, sorry, got a little carried away).

Anyways, my point is, your point doens't really stand up because cigarettes do more harm in less time and the effects aren't always visible. They're addictive too. Donuts on the other hand, you'll usually see the results of the harm that's being done and they aren't addictive.

can we start a 'post of the day' thread?

In Norway people are very fit and slim largely in my opinion due to the high taxes on alcohol and high food prices. All food costs a fortune but raw products are far cheaper than prepared meals. £6 for a standard microwave lasagne.

So does Red Bull, doesn't make it healthy.

You're taking it completely out of context there.

It makes it less healthy than something that doesn't contain sugar, assuming all else is equal.

I disagree as in isolation it isn't in any way harmful.

And they're not only drinking a little 250ml serving of an innocent smoothie, either.

I doubt they are drinking any, it seems to be a way of screwing over the health conscious with tax.

Yes, but you made it sound like it shouldn't be because they're 'healthy' when in reality they aren't great. If you're going to have fruit then have fruit, it's a lot more filling than a drink that's 15-20% sugar.

Indeed it shouldn't be because it has the same nutritional content as eating fruit, and results in those who would otherwise not eat fruit getting those nutrients.

Sometimes I wish we didn't have a healthcare system.

Health insurance. If you don't work, you can't afford it. If you work you can.

Slippery slope. Where is the line drawn? Do we stop offering health care to those who get drunk then become involved in a car accident? What about sports players? They know the risks! DIY injury? Should have hired someone, you know the risks!

Smokers pay an insane amount of tax as it is anyway.

That kind of attitude along with the rubbish advice the NHS gives out is what's wrong with this whole issue. Fat doesn't make you fat, it doesn't cause any of the issues they're generally blamed for either, low fat high carb diets are what make you fat and increase your chances of a variety of conditions.

I'm significantly smaller now after 15 months on a high fat diet than I ever was following the NHS advice. Every single blood test I have done has shown massive improvement too, back to normal healthy levels. This is in spite of coming off all medication which I used to rely on to give any sort of control.

The majority of money spent on diabetes care could be saved if they'd just get over the dodgy 50 year old research which got us into this mess, and put people on a similar diet to mine.

Is this where you offer to sell us a book or are you going to share backed up with some evidence?

Most. Stupid. Post. Ever.

What do you expect those who cannot afford or get private cover*? Just expect them to die?

* a lot of existing conditions are hard to get cover for or astronomically expensive. I earn a good salary and couldn't afford private cover for my Pre-existing conditions.

Lol @ the OP.

Your views are mashed, you think taxpayers money should be used to help you if you get ill from smoking but not if someone gets ill from eating too much, that is very backwards if you ask me.

They're both as bad as each other, and smoking I think is even worse!

I went on to give more information here:

This is a fairly decent write up of the subject, there are many more if you google though - http://www.marksdailyapple.com/saturated-fat-healthy/

For me, following the advice from that site and other paleo/primal/low carb sources for diet (quite strict) and exercise (as much as I can, I work too much etc..) has taken me from my starting point last year of taking 5 pills per day to 0 pills per day, weighing 148kg to my current 87kg (and still falling) at 6'3, Hba1c down from well into the diabetic range to totally normal, blood pressure down from elevated to normal healthy levels, cholesterol from high to normal... My doctors (apart from one I saw recently) can't understand how I've gone from totally following their dietary advice and getting worse, to going totally against their dietary advice and having such a dramatic improvement.

I don't have any books to sell, but there are loads of books on the subject ranging from explanations of the ideas and science behind it, to books just giving advice on how eat and stick to the basic principals day to day. Google will help you.
