As title really, which would you go for on an I5 3570K, Gigabyte Z77-D3H w/ 16GB TeamElite RAM, looking to overclock to 4-4.2ish at some point.

Thoughts? Final component I need to choose along with the above for my new order! (Also, what thermal compound is best nowadays? Haven't needed any in 4 years!)

They're both about the same with the Phanteks taking a narrow lead.
As long as you have case clearance for either one, pick whichever looks the prettiest to you :)
The TIM supplied with either one should do the job just fine.

I own the Phanteks PH-TC14PE and would suggest the Silver Arrow SB-E.
Why?
Because trying to mount the Phanteks PH-TC14PE perfectly straight makes me want to punch kittens and drown things...

TC14PE is not hard to mount. Have you tried mounting the Silver Arrow SB-E? Have you put fans on both coolers? Phanteks fan clips are a cake walk and Thermalright can be a right mare getting bottom clipped. Swings and round-a-bouts.

Silver Arrow SB-E has very similar mount.

With either mount fit all mounting pieces before tightening them onto motherboard. Trial fit the cooler before you remove the protective cover on heatsink to make sure everything works and fans fit as planned. Then do the final install.

I do prefer Thermalright fans to Phanteks... But both are great coolers and with great fans.

Get the one you like the looks of best. ;)

The TC14PE isn't hard to mount. But IS hard to mount straight (from my experience with two different rigs).

The Silver Arrow SB-E has a slightly different mount that fits better and easy to tighten.

Granted the fan clips on the Phatenks are great. That's about all that's going for it IMO.

What about it's nice colors?
Or it's nice smooth top?
Or how much nicer color coordinated fans are?

It's all swings and round-a-bouts / double edged sword. ;)

I had a Silver Arrow but a friend was after one so I let him have it and bought a Phanteks.

Both can be a pain in the ass to mount but the Thermalright fan clips ...OMG, I found the Phanteks a better over all package but temp wise on my rig they are pretty much matched.

My only unforeseen issue with my new phantek was that my ram modules forced me to place the end fan slightly higher up the cooler....resulting in it extending past where the side panel would be...luckily the noctua i was replacing used 120mm fans...so i used one 120mm and one 140mm.

Well, I ordered the other 3 parts and no cooler for now, so will have time to decide, but I'm thinking the Phantek (Black) will get bought, hopefully the front fans on it should be ok on top of TeamElite RAM, which isn't ridiculsouly high.

I picked a D14 over the silver arrow and phanteks because of its easy to mount reputation, which is well deserved, it was easy to mount ;)

I care not for all the it's looks. Means nothing to me. Especially since i don't have a windowed case..

D14 mount is same design as Phanteks. "X" backing plate, 4 studs, 2x front bars and a crossbar. I've used all three and all are about the same to mount. SA uses a square ring on top which makes it easier to align crossbar. But if you mount the crossbar with sidebars before tightening 4 mount screws on D14 & Phanteks you get same results. And anybody with any experience at assembling things knows to start all screw before tightening to be sure eveything is aligned. ;) That's Assembly 101 stuff.

I had the extreme, well it's all boxed up now ready to be sold but it was great (now watercolled) very easy to mount, and the fan clips were easy to... Don't know how you'd struggle tbh.

It quite loud on full tilt is my only issue but they all are once revved up.

The beauty is you don't need full speed unless you have extreme overclock and are actually using cpu under heavy load. I have TY-143 fans on my Phanteks right now and never use them over 1100rpm. My 980 rarely gets above 50c at 1050rpm and the it hits 1100rpm for a moment. My 920 @ 4.0GHz would hit 68c @ 1300rpm (TY-140 or TY-143 fans) but that's it. I need to make my 980 work faster but have no need. At 3.5GHz it does in 10 minutes what 920 @ 4.0GHz did in 15 minutes.

I might just get a SA SB-E / SB-E Extreme just to see how it performs compared to my TC14PE. and old Cogage Arrow (same as original SA).

Phantek it is, sod it, its 4:30am and I want to go to bed!!

Will grab some AS too, although is there stock paste applied that is any good? Or remove it?

Some think so, some think not. :)

Most good TIMs are so close in efficiency that it's very hard to test them and know which is better. We are talking less then 2c at most.. often less than .5c. Holding your mouth a little different will make that much difference. Me, I just wink and get .3725c cooler temp. ;)
