What do people know about these?
I've found what looks to be a clean example with 92K on the clock.
FSH,MOT
Just had cambelt/waterpump etc and discs done too.
4 good tyres,
£1500

Does that sound reasonable?
It'll be replacing my trusty MkIII Golf,
The only issue with it is that the boot lock sometimes pops open-is this a known fault?
Anything else I should check out on the test drive?

Much appreciated :)

Pretty Bomboroof but that sounds like a lot for the car to me, £500 off would make it more appealing

I had an issue with my a3 where the boot wouldn't open (and with a friends ibiza) but not where the boot opens itself, should be an easy fix though

All the others with this sort of mileage or lower are getting on for £2k+ though, hopefully I could get it down to £1300 or so.
And like you say the boot pop should be a simple ish fix.

Be a bit sceptical though - if all the others are 2 grand upward, why is this one cheaper? I cant comment on the true value but thats the mindset you need to go in with

As has been said, these are pretty bombproof, it'll probably be a mechanical injection system so pretty crude but reliable. Dont expect "GT" to mean "quick" though!

Where have you seen them actually sell for 2k though? Im not saying they dont but when these occasionally go through auction they rarely fetch more than 750 or so. Should a trader pick it up I can see how it would be priced in the 1500 to 2000 range but nit privately. Doesn't matter really at the end of the day its hardly a lot of cash so long as its a decent one.

I don't know if they're selling at 2k but the last one cost me £300 and has been perfect, I'm quite aware of how slow they are but whilst I'm super saving for my fist mortgage I don't really want to spend a great deal.
I'll have to see what I can do on price then.
It's only had 2 owners from new so I'm expecting a decent car here!

Clutch replaces are a big job, suspension is also an expensive one at a garage but I, myself would happily undertake a suspension change on a Golf.

Check for excessive smoke during the test drive, blue or white smoke, expect a bit of black sooty smoke that is normal but blue or white points me to oil and turbo problems.

Check for no contamination in the oil and water, if there is contamination be suspicious, if the oil looks like chocolate milkshake walk away.

Check that it engages in all gears smoothly and as you would expect and that the gear stick doesnt have any excessive play in it.

Make sure you see a receipt for the cambelt or physically check the belt is brand new, unfortunately in this day and age people say one thing and don't actually do it when it comes to cars.

Also when test driving dont be afraid to drive it hard, check that it pulls well through the entire rev range and the turbo holds pressure as it should and doesn't cause the engine to splutter.

All in all the mkiv's are great cars and it sounds like a good example with 92k and 2 owners and at that price is a good price, I'm a motor trader and would ask for 2-2.5k for the car.

VW addressed the rust issues on the mk3 wheel arches on the mkiv but its worth a check anyway to see they're not corroded, and also check for usual signs of accident damage in the boot floor, front panel etc.

Hope this helps :) remember if the sale doesn't feel right, either the seller or the car walk away... better to have to keep searching than foot a large mechanical bill next week.

Thanks for the reply Leigno... I guess I'm just gonna have to drive the 150 miles to Cardiff and have a haggle...
I'd be OK replacing suspension parts but maybe the clutch would have to be done by someone in the know...
I take it you can get to the belt on these then for a visual?

You should be able to yes, was just a poppable plastic cover on my a3, a visual inspection will tell you nothing though unless its absolutely knackered - of you cant find evidence of it in the last few years just change it

Rear suspension bushes are a common fault in mk4's so check those. Mine needed doing at around 65k. Also check electrics. Generally though mk4's are pretty solid and bullet proof. I loved mine.

when you say common failure, what you really mean is that they are a garanteed failure.

mk4s are old now. after this amount of time, those bushes will definitely have become a consumable

they are a problem on these cars because they are a common NEGLECT item ie people wont bother doing them becase it is expensive

the difference between worn rear beam bushes and new ones is litterally night and day

the mk4 was considered a good comfy car back in the day but it wont be a nice car with knackered suspension, i promise you that.

my mk4 had all the suspension redone about 60k ago, its past its best again and sadly is coming up for itself second suspension rebuild! (but then i am picky)

^^ well yes they are a guaranteed failure. But even when newer they were recognised as something to keep an eye out for. So on a much older car they would be an area to check for evidence of replacement.

Similar set up to the mk5 fiesta's/puma's? or is it IRS?
I can deal with that...

It's described as a very clean car and with relatively low mileage and only two owners I'd be surprised to find a great deal wrong with it, I'm still gonna call before I go and politely tell him I have no intention of paying asking price... see where that gets me!

Superchips look good-300+Nm or torque :D

no irs, its pretty old school under there :D

clean etc doesnt mean a lot imo. the problems youll find are the things the never bothered to sort out and at this age of car the potential list is pretty big
