I come back to my pc one day to find its not switching on at all. Long story short, my psu had blown, or at least there is nothing coming out of it.

So i swapped out the dead psu for a working one (from another working PC) and the fans spin, PC turns on, POST beeps, then nothing. The system compeltely crashes and i cant get into the bios settings or anything. So now im trying to narrow down the problem to whats actually died. Also a quick note, the hdd light at the front of the pc stays on when its crashed too.

RAM is fine, new psu is fine. Havnt tested the hard drive, is the constant hdd light a sign thats dead? either way i booted without any drives connected and still the same problem.

BIOS chip could be dead, would probably explain the lack of boot?

The system is an AMD Phenom II 555BE, Gigabyte 880G-UD2H motherboard, 8gb RAM (4x2gb corsair) and some samsung IDE drive

Reset the BIOS and disconnect everything that isn't absolutely essential (basically just CPU & cooler, graphics and a stick of memory). If that works start reconnecting things until it doesn't.

its more than likely a corrupted cmos due to the psu blowing,id leave out the motherboard battery for 30mins or overnight then try,if its still doing it try with just one memory stick installed

The PSU is connected properly? everything secure.

I know it probably is, but iv rushed putting a PSU in and had this problem.

You cleared CMOS with the jumpers?

With just MOBO and CPU connected i havent got a clue apart from something wrong in the CMOS.
