The work laptop has just died a horrible slow death in the office and the family are moaning at me to get it sorted...

Frankly its too old to even consider fixing.

Spec of it is 40gb HDD, Intel Celeron 1.7GHz and 512mb ram

They would like a desktop now so can some one please spec me the complete opposite of what I want for myself.

Need a cheap and cheerful workhorse that will be used for internet browsing, word processing, skype and some youtube usage.

budget is as low as human possible in all areas, everything is needed including a monitor, keyboard, mouse.

OS not required I don't think, can someone confirm for me that the Windows 7 home premium sp1 64-bit comes with 3 licences so I can use it on 3 machines?? As I'm ordering that with my gaming setup.

There's a Home Premium Family Upgrade pack that covers three machines, but it is only intended for upgrading machines with an existing Windows licence. I'm not aware of a similar offering for use on new hardware.

ah my bad, so yeah an OS is required then too, they dont have much money to spend on this build at all ie. as little as humanly possible to get a working machine for them.

I know the monitor is going to be a killer so may source a second hand one from somewhere for them.

One other thing I will need a wi-fi card too

For the described usage I'd just buy a cheap 15" laptop. Under £300 and zero hassle.

You and me both... but hey its not our money, if its a desktop they want then I shall research and build for them... plus I'd be grateful of the practice before I do my gaming build ;)

Even if it comes built I'll end up providing support for it, the joys of living under the same roof and being the most knowledgeable about computers (which I know next to nothing about) but I'm learning day by day being on here :)

And it is also upgradable, and easier to replace parts yourself if they ever go wrong. And monitor is bigger, as is keyboard, speakers will be better... there are all sorts of reasons to go for a desktop over a laptop!

Don't forget to add the cost of the OS to the specs above.

OcUK have some reasonable looking pre-built machines available for the same money (or less) which would include a 24 month warranty.

Yeah I just had a quick look, I'll speak to the family in the morning and see if they want to go desktop or laptop, laptop makes sense for them but you know what people are like.

thanks for your help, now I'm going back to bury my head in threads about case fans and controllers for my gaming build :D
