Short version, we have an outside security light on the rear of the house as its like the abyss out there at night, we use it mostly for taking the bins out on Thursdays, or for getting tools and stuff out the shed in emergencies, last night at about half 10 while my mother was taking the bins out our neighbour who lives behind us came round to complain threatening to get the police involved because in their words its illegal to use external lights after 9pm. My father told her straight we had been using the light since before her house was built and not to be so rude.

Is the any chance she can actually back up her threats? sounds stupid to me :S

Yup this is why all street lights are switched off at night and security lights were invented to be used only during the daytime when they are needed most.

Read this, if your light is poorly angled or not suitable for purpose then you could be in trouble

I'd imagine unless your intended the light to be a nuisance to your neighbour there shouldn't really be anything they can do.

If that were the case (no external lighting at night), how would cars, street lights, shops, etc etc work?

Moronic neighbour is moronic.

I guess it depends how bright the light is and if it shines directly into the neighbors house, or lower where it wouldn't effect your neighbor?

EDIT: Although, saying that, its a security light, so I only comes on when there is movement right? In that case I see no problem, I can't see the police getting involved with you using an outside light for 30 seconds lol.

I doubt there is any laws against it, however look into pleasing next door by:
Angling the light down so it doesn't shine through their windows.
Make a shroud for it so the light only goes where it's needed.
Change the wattage down with a new bulb so you're not projecting light with the power of a thousand sun's.

I would reposition it or put a shield around it to stop the light extending onto your neighbours. Lights are for using at night, clearly your neighbour doesn't understand that concept.

it is a bit ridiculous to get the police involved, but also some people have ridiculous lights in the kw of power for their garden. How powerful is yours?

Someone over the road (over 100m away) has one on the back of their house facing into their garden and it shines directly into our house, and adds a whole lot of light to our upstairs if it's on which can be annoying.

David Thorne - Isn't that the 7-legged spider guy?

Have to say the 7 legged spider was much better, but a genuine lol for:

As I realise this probably won't narrow it down much for you, I will give you a third clue in the form of a riddle:

What burns with the light of a thousand suns and is in the letterbox?
