Looking for a pci-e 3.0 motherboard, preferrably asus as thats what im used to. Budget is around £100. Currently have a p8p67 which is fine but id be willing to sell my old board to recuperate some of the cash.

Specs

i7 2700k
7970
16gb DDR 3 1600mhz
2x SSD, 1 sata 6gbs, 1 sata 3gbs.
Windows 8
1440p monitor

Is this for future proofing Matt? As the 2700k doesn't support 3.0....

I think you should move to x79...:o

I've lost touch with which motherboard i need to be honest, when i last looked the only answer was P67.

Right ill have a look at x79 boards.

My 7970 supports pci-e 3.0 though? Yeah future proofing would be good, seeing if i can do a cheap upgrade.

Check my Sig (which is what I was getting at with x79...:p).

2700k will work in those z68/z77 boards but to take advantage of pci 3.0 you'd need to upgrade to ivy, as with x79 you'd need to change chip too...

And yes the 7970 is gen3 :)

So the 7970 won't be making use of pci-e 3.0 because the 2700k won't or is that separate?

My budget is only £100 pgi. :D

Is a P8Z68 board a good choice or is that outdated now?

I had a p8z68, brilliant board :)

Tbh you're not going to see much difference on 2.0 over 3.0, I'd be tempted to keep what you have until haswell.

The cpu can only give 2.0, so the 7970 will be at 2.0, when paired with ivy or sb-e it will run at 3.0 as those chips can give 3.0.

If you plan to go ivy then make sure the z68 is stamped as gen3.

With a £100 budget it is not worth it as you will have to upgrade your CPU to make use of PCI-e 3.0.

Also the performance difference with current GPUs between PCI-e 3.0 and 2 is not that great.

Ah i didn't realise that.

Well no point me upgrading then.

Thanks lads.
