My car mot and tax is due today, won't pass mot until monday when repairs/new parts are fitted, do i need to declare my car SORN, even though it will be ready to be taxed monday? The guy told me there's a bit of leeway and I should have no issues taxing it next week. Anyone offer any advice?

You'll be fine to tax it on Monday. Just don't drive it while it isn't taxed (unless driving it to a pre-arranged MOT).

Technically the test centre should give you your new MOT certificate, you should then hop on a bus or whatever to the Post Office and get a new Tax Disk. Then go back to the test centre and drive away your car.

If you want to chance it, you could drive your car away from the test centre, but there is always a chance of being stopped/caught on the way to getting the new disk.

As I've just said in your other thread, you can sort out an MOT up to 1 month before it expires and they will post-date the new certificate to still last for 12 months from the end of the current certificate. This would mean that you avoid this problem, as you could have MOT'd the car weeks ago and driven it away afterwards. Then you could have got your Tax today, or whenever and your MOT (that you sorted weeks ago), would still have run for another 12 months from today.

Yeah I understand, how about if it passes the MOT, then before I go to pick it up I purchase the tax online on my card then go collect it, would that work?

Thanks

I'm not sure how the online system works and whether there is a 'grace period'.

The 'crime' is 'failing to display' a valid TAX disk. So unless there is a special exception for the period while your disk is in the post, then I think you could still end up with a possible problem, if caught.

I think the online system is meant for when you order up the disk, in advance of the old one expiring, ie getting the MOT sorted well in advance, then sorting the tax in advance too. Like described in my previous email.

To be safe, you'd be better getting the disk straight from the post office.

You can legally drive a car to and from a pre arranged MoT (or any appointment with a VOSA agent) even without road fund license (in fact without it being registered either), unless the MoT centre deem it to be dangerous in which case it must not be used. You must be insured of course and notify your insurer if you're unsure of their terms.

Andi.

He is talking about driving without a valid tax disk, while he awaits the new one being delivered, after ordering online. Not about just driving to/from an not centre.

I already mentioned the info about driving to/from pre-booked not (albeit in less detail than you) :-)

If you buy tax online you do get a 5 day grace period of not displaying it, however this only applies if you order it online before the end of the month it runs out.

Just SORN it? It takes 30 seconds online. Then you can tax it on Monday?

This is utterly rubbish advice, OP just drive back you are allowed to drive back from the test centre, and also you have a grace period with yours arriving in the post.

Everything is ANPR these days, the police wouldnt even look at your tax disc. They wait for the computer to ping no tax. If you have paid online, your car will not show up on any ANPR.

The displaying tax disc rule is rapidly becoming redundant with the new electronic systems.

I once forgot about my tax, and went 2 WEEKS over the expiration of the old one, passed countless traffic police cars nothing ever happened. Purchased online as soon I as I remembered, got a new disc 3 days later.

Why is it utterly rubbish advice? It costs absolutely nothing and takes just 20 seconds of his time to do!

There is no reason not to!

and also you have a grace period with yours arriving in the post.

Only if you renew it online prior to the expiration of the existing disc, which is not the case here.

Mines not being taxed till Monday as my pay doesn't clear till then. Technically I should have the book thrown at me but I need my car and will not use it till Monday. I will be driving it to work un-taxed as I will not get into the Post Office till lunchtime.

I couldn't give a flying you know what as I will have to pay from the first of the month anyway. As my job has absolutely no public transport, I am disabled and have been made redundant and found a job within 14 days. The Government will have to decide whether it wants me not to start the job, hence keeping me off benefits or give me some leeway for about 30 hours till I can get it taxed.

LOL, my rant over.

From what i'm aware, as long as I pay for the tax, they can read it on their system anyway and confirm I have tax so I assume I'm fine to tax it once it has passed and before I go to pickup my car on Monday, then it will be fine to drive it until the tax arrives?

Good god as if there isn't enough to worry about in life..

Get the MOT done and tax it afterwards where ever and however you need to, be it online or at the post office.
There wont be sentinels hovering over your car preparing to kill you on sight should you even have the audacity to drive it over the weekend untaxed.
