Christmas and no money

Hi all. I lost my job about 5 weeks ago, it was a temp contract so I expected it. Was made redundant from job before that. I'm out of work and looking and just wanted to know if anyone else was in the same boat as me...

I literally have no money to buy Christmas presents and my family are struggling also due to bills. This is the first year that I haven't bought anything and I know that people understand this however, it's getting me down big time.

Just feeling a bit down :(

Start by selling your Playstation. You should not feel obliged to be a consumeristic moron at Xmas who has to buy rubbish.

Sorry to hear it. If everyoine in the family is in a similar situation then maybe you could suggest that no-one buys anything or puit a £5/£10 limit on a token funny gift. Try to make it a Christmas for getting together and seeing each other if you're close enough or travel costs aren't too bad.

Well if I was in this situation and I wanted money for christmas, I'd probably just go to a few agencies and take anything. That's just a short term plan.

Make stuff. Seriously. Baking is easy to do and can be amazingly cheap. People will appreciate the thought - doubly so if you don't usually do it. Get creative and make Christmas decorations. Offer to babysit for relatives with nippers. Help around the house. Clean out a friend's gutters. You are limited only by your own creativity.

Not all gifts have to be bought.

Well, at least you've got your family, that's more important than presents.

This is true. I said that I didn't want anything/didn't care if I didn't get anything as long as we're all together for the dinner which I care about most. Sorry for this thread but just feel down, I know I'll snap out of it. I'm feeling like this as I've never been unemployed over Christmas and I usually love splashing out on gifts for others.

My family stopped buying each other "real" presents a few years ago, we just don't see the point any more, none of us have money we wouldn't rather be saving.

We might give the odd voucher or random small gift but for the most part we just eat food, drink wine and generally have a nice day.

Our family is growing fairly quickly and Christmas is becoming very expensive. I think we'll have to do something soon, like just buying for the nippers.

Meh,

Our family stopped buying real presents ages ago, I mean we are in hard times as it is why do we need to feel pressured to blow money we havnt got for the fear or being labelled a cretin if you dont buy someone a gift.

Maybe a small gift, nice dinner and company will be fine. I am not buying for my brother as he is being evicted on 15th December thanks to his scumbag landlord so he is having to shell out lots of money on new place, I have just had to shell out a small fortune on my car so I can commute to work, luckily I dont have a girlfriend, one time during the year I am glad I am single :)

Vouchers for "Anything" that you can do - clear gutters, powerwash patios, any other skills that you have - computer stuff, oil changes on the car, etc. I'd far rather see my cousin clear the gullys in my back yard than I would do it myself, in this weather!

That's generally what we do in our family, there's too many of us grown ups to buy things for, with so many kids to get things for it becomes a very expensive time of year.

So we generally buy the kids nice stuff and just random junk for the adults, like a bottle of baileys, box of chocs etc.
