I'm looking at going on a diet as I seriously need to lose some weight. More than some really. According to my BMI I need to lose about 11 stone to be my ideal weight :o

I'm going to join a gym, but I also know that drastically altering my eating habits is going to be neccessery in order to help me get there. I did try the Slimfast diet a couple of years back. It was actually working for a while, I did shed quite a bit of weight in a reasonable amount of time. But lack of exercise and slipping back into bad eating habits while on the diet ended up ruining my efforts. I'm tempted to try the slimfast approach again, but I'm wondering if there are any otheres worth going for. I know theres Weight Watchers, but I've never been a big fan of their ready meals. I also found a company called Diet Chef, that sends you out a hamper of breakfasts/lunchs/dinners/snacks that you select yourself, but its about £215 per month. Just a bit more than im happy to pay...

Anyone else know any alternatives?

Salad.

But seriously, it is not that hard to work out a balanced diet which is relatively low in fat. Just cut out the crap like cheese and beer and too much bread.

Just work out a plan for the week and stick to it.

Why not just try the 3% or less fat diet?

try 6 small meals a day

eggs for breakfast or low sugar cereal with skimmed milk
banana around 11 or other fruit
baked potato or chicken/ham for lunch
snack - ryvita or something
chicken or other meat with veg for tea
snack (if you need to - nuts or fruit) if you need to around any other part of the day.
swap a snack for a protein drink and drink lots of water.

ditch fruit juice, milk, tea, coffee, frozen products (findus, bernard matthews etc) chocolate, takeaways, pack meals out with veg or salad, rice or pasta if before 14:00 hrs and use an excercise bike to lessen strain on joints.

11 stone is a lot but achievable.

I suggest you request this is moved to Sports Arena, and then read Steedie's diet thread.

Personally I recommend just pre-cooking all your meals on like Sunday, and then reheat as needed.

How much do you weigh?

The basic solution is eat less and exercise more. If you do that, you will lose weight.

Don't be too expectant. It will take a long time to shift 11 stone. We're talking in years rather than months realistically

If you're weighing yourself, always weigh yourself at the same time each time. For simplicity, do it when waking up.

First off if you need to lose 11 stone speak with your dr before doing a quick fix diet. Slim fast is not a great idea as it does not change your mind set. It reads like your a lazy eater as in you eat lots of ready meals. This is the issue, learn to cook simple healthy meals. Jamie's 15 minute ones are ideal. Cut out snacks and fizzy pop just drink water. Soup is an easy win, a can of soup can be less than 300 cals and is an ideal lunch. Find a healthy breakfast with skimmed milk another easy food. Eat raw cut up veg as snacks with fruit to get you between meal times. Lose the weight slowly and change your eating habits.

Exercise is easy just go for a good paced walk every day with a little jogging to raise your pulse, when you get fitter do more jogging than walking, swimming is also a great exercise as its very low impact for your joints.

There's many different weight loss diets and clubs and they do work to some extent but the best way imo is to learn about nutrition, exercise and how your body works and responds to them. Ie fat in food does not necessarily = bad, bad fats = bad .You will want to lose body fat rather than just weight so changing your lifestyle with a good balanced diet and exercise will help,at his should be a permanent thing rather than hitting a target and going back to your u healthy ways.

24 stone, 5 pounds. I've always been on the chubby side, but I never used to be anywhere this big. I remember in 2006 when I was recovering from my operations from my chrons disease, I was a 32 inch waist. God how did I go from that to this... v.v

I'm already planning to see a doctor early next week, since I'm having body issues which I think might be blood pressure related. I'm hoping to get some info from him on the subject.

I'm definetely going to join the gym. My dad did when he was diagnosed borderline diabetic and he's lost a ton of weight through it. I feel a little leery about swimming though. I don't like the idea of people seeing my man boobs diving into the pool. :o Maybe after I've lost some of the weight first.

Exercise is grossly over-rated for weight loss.

Here's what I do when i start getting too fat.

Day 1: eat anything you like
Day 2: eat nothing (except coffee, chewing gum and cigarettes)
Day 3: eat anything
Day 4: eat nothing
and so on.

Drink plenty of water.

So it's about 36 hours of fasting (including sleeping) followed by about 12 hours of eating. If I can be bothered I do high intensity cardio on the fast days to quickly burn off all the carbs I have floating around and start burning fat. Then on the eating days I might do a bit of weights and pullups and things. I dont worry about protein shakes or any of that business, i literally eat whatever I feel like.

So if you normally burn about 3500 cals in 36 hours that is roughly the cals in 1 lb of fat. So if you want to lose 20 lbs you only have to diet for 20 days (no eating days).

If you are really fat and insulin resistant you have to ease in to it very slowly, start with skipping breakfast on the fast day, then after a couple weeks skip breakfast + lunch, then a couple more weeks skip dinner too.

On the eating days I'm hardly even hungry so I don't eat more than usual.

First of all I would start with small incremental adjustments to your current diet, and progressing slowly so eventually you change your current lifestyle to that of a healthy maintainable one.

First of all ask for advice in sports arena for the more diet concerned and informed people.

Don't do a "diet" like ww/slim fast as it doesn't teach you to eat good food and maintain good eating habits.

I am also trying to loose weight at the moment, (1 stone 3 pounds since the last week in September so far). I'd say do the following ...

- for a week keep track of what you eat & drink, not what you think you eat and drink but what you actually eat and drink ... including those odd snacks you forget about if some one asks you later.
- look at what you can drop out of your diet easily. Do you really need that packet of crisps or those sweets? Can you switch from that fizzy drink to something healthier.
- find some low calorie recipes you can make to decrease your intake and eat healthier.

- don't attempt to starve yourself or do some faddy diet
- don't cut out all your treats. If you just eat boring bland food then the chances of you dropping the diet is going to be higher. Don't feel to bad if you slip at times.
- given your weight don't try and jump into an large exercise program at this point
- talk to your doctor about it
