Pensioner goes blind after vodka but retrieves eyesight after whisky

Guy was a grade A plank...

Denis Duthie suddenly went blind after vodka he had been drinking reacted with his diabetes medication.

Someone I know has to deal with the aftermaths of this on a not infrequent occasion and most of them don't regain their sight.

As surgery got underway, the doctors thought he could have formaldehyde poisoning , which can be treated by administering ethanol, which is a strong type of alcohol found in drinks such as whisky.
wut

It's actually a badly re-worded story originally posted by stuff.co.nz but ignores the District Health Board response which is, amusingly, the entire point of the piece.

e : ha! The joke appears to be on me as they've now listed the NZ Herald which when it first broke they had not. Still no mention of the DHB response though.

It's certainly the standard treatment for methanol poisoning, and I think for some other organic liquid poisons where the compound reacts in a similar way to ethanol.
My irk was with ethanol being a 'strong form of alcohol' found in drinks such as whisky, as if other drinks somehow had a different kind.
