I am planning to do this. Is this a worthy upgrade? I see benchmarks and the GTX 670 is way above the 7870 in gaming and also the 670 is a high-end card up there with the 680 and 7970.

Tell meh peoples. :D

At that resolution it is not worth it.

Look at getting a 1080p or better monitor first and then upgrading from the 7870, which is still a very capable card.

Waste of money imho, as above, treat yourself to a new monitor and clock the nuts off of your 7870, it won't be that far behind a 670/7950 with a decent oc.

There`s no point.
Wait for new gen if you feel that 7870 is getting weak but, I would Overclock it before buying next gen.

The difference between a 7870 and a GTX 670 isn't all that big, not enough to warrant doing it.

And on a 1600 x 900 screen your not going to see any difference, infact if you play games with vSync on your not going to see much difference even at 1920 x 1080P.

7870 benefitted more than any other card from the 12.11 beta drivers, so I doubt performance would be much different between it and a 670 now. Upgrade monitor first.

When all are overclocked there'll be a sizeable gap between the 7870 and 7950/670 but not at that resolution the OP plays at. It's not demanding enough. :)
