Nan just got burgled - Help me track the laptop

The new intel anti theft tech is pretty good in cases like this, you can actually track your laptop in stealth mode like you can an iphone. It is also possivle that, if they are probably numpties, check if they have not have changed the default router password so you could also get their ip address from there and give it to the police. They should be able to get VM/provider to release details of who/where the ip address was leased to at the time. That is "If" the old bill can be bothered..

Sorry to hear :(

The best thing you can do is help them secure the place incase they decide to come back in a few weeks to see what new stuff has been bought (dont these scummers often go back to same place?).

Extra locks / change locks, tag items etc.

Might be worth stopping in the local cash converters / pawn shops to see if any of the jewellery has turned up.

You could have a photo, an ip and a signed confession from the thieves. The police will do nothing unless you go around there and claim it back. Then YOU would be done.

I hope your nan is alright.

If you get an IP, post it here.

Also, if you can, have a look at the packaging and find out the mac address for the NIC.

Bugger hope she's not too shook up by it all. As already mentioned i would spend some time and money making it harder for repeat break in.

What do you plan to do with any evidence you collect? Have you spoken to the police, have they confirmed that they will act on any of it?

If you have logmein installed, and it's on the 'unattended access' list then you shouldn't see a UAC notification. Presume you've done a dummy run on another machine?

This is a good point. You should be able to get the router ip, as most people don't even know their router password in the first place so the defaults just get left on.

Will do!

I havent spoken to the police personally but should I get any info then I will pass the details on straight away. Should they not act upon it then I'll do it myself.

Where in Southampton are you and which area did the burgary take place? Depending what you find I might be able to help or pass your details to someone who can.

She's in Shirley. (So not the best place)

But thanks, will give you a shout should anything turn up from this.

Switching your keyboard warrior mode off for a second, are you really going to start banging down doors and demanding the laptop back?

A likely response might be that they don't know what you are talking about. Are you then going to assault them or force your way into their property?

You would then have ended up in a situation where you could be arrested. Meanwhile, your Gran's insurance company could have just got her a brand new laptop... which is the reason the Police won't be that fussed.

:)

But seriously, It depends what they look like from the webcam shots lol.

If they're trending the muscles of the hulk then yes I agree the police would do a fantastic job.

If they are wearing burberry and a "I Hate Your Nan lol" T-Shirt, I may be more inclined to go Liam Neeson on them.

Why not just get their IP and then go to the police? if they aren't online wait until they are.

Police wouldn't do anything off just an IP. This would involve them contacting ISP's and all sorts.. never going to happen for whats classed as a relatively small crime.

If I can provide them with IP, Photos, Addresses, Times Dates etc etc.. Its much more likely they will do something.

And if it was the same scrote who nicked it, don't you think that even if you were stronger than them, that its still a bad cause of action. Aside from the fact that you may be arrested, as I already pointed out, you also face the fact that they know where your Nan lives and might make her life a living hell as revenge.
