Steam train rides around Glasgow

Hi all,

Going to Glasgow in January for a couple of nights to watch the footy as it's my fella's birthday. I'd like to plan something for him and just wondered if anyone knows of any steam train journeys we could partake in around Glasgow? We will be driving to Glasgow from Grantham so we'll have the car.

I'd like a dining service if possible.

Any help is much appreciated, never been to Glasgow!

There's one that goes from Fort William to Mallaig but I don't think any stop at either of Glasgow's main stations.

Thanks, I saw this one already but it's a 2 and a half hour drive from Glasgow.

We have a good transport museum, which is free. At least you'll see a steam train there.

This is the nearest to Glasgow and is easily driveable (approx 45mins) but it doesn't do a dinner service.

The good ones are in the highlands such as the Strathspey and Jacobite (West Coast) runs.

Just west from the city centre, on the river. Maybe 40 mins walk from George Square. (Centre of glasgow).

Or go to Windles place!

loads of weegies on here so ask anything, someone will be able to help.

Boness & Kinneil Railway runs steam but no dates for 2013 yet. It's between Glasgow and Edinburgh.

If you're staying anywhere near the SECC (Crowne plaza is pretty good) you'll be a walk away from the transport museum which is pretty decent as already said, alternatively if you're staying in the centre of town then you can jump on the train or get a taxi for not a lot of cash.

Out of interest what game are you planning on going to?

I have checked on Google, we are staying 13mins drive from the SECC

We are planning on the Celtic match on Jan 2nd (if we can get tickets!!) They're still not on sale!

The Jacobite is a brilliant steam train journey. Stunning scenery. A long way from Glasgow though.

Just don't stay anywhere near Parkhead!! Get the train or bus on the day too, pretty pointless trying to take the car

Theres a lot of tough areas in Glasgow. High crime/low income neighbourhoods. Best to steer clear if your from out of town.
