Landrover swimming

It's not in Cambridgeshire so I'm not sure why they are commenting, it's in Norfolk! However I think the reason they are mentioning it as there are cars stuck virtually every day in that part of the wash road, standard cars seem to think they can get through it. The other day I watched a girl on a moped decide if she could get through it..

My parents live the otherside of the bridge when he clears the water in Welney.

Some people are nuts. We had a bit of flooding near us last week but people were destroying cars in ridiculous puddles

Save yourself 10 minutes or be sat there after work thinking how you're gonna fix your blown up car

I think the issue here is, the vehicle might be capable, but is the driver? Just because this guy made it through doesn't mean someone else, in a similar vehicle wouldn't get stuck. The idea about the police moaning is because the road was signposted as closed, if he had got stuck or washed out, the emergency services would have had to step in because of the stupidity of the driver.

However, I'm not supporting or condoning the drivers actions.

Good point, but I reckon that the kind of person who owns a Defender with a snorkel in the first place is probably the kind of fairly experienced, practical driver who knows how to approach such situations, not some dappy mum doing the school run.

Whilst I mostly agree with you there are occasions where the term "all the gear and no idea" is appropriate :)

You see the odd idiot fully kitted up and managing to fail where a normal car would get through OK.

Not sure i'd agree, I think for many things like the snorkel are just as much a fashion accessory as anything.

I'd be amazed if even 10% of the Defenders I see with snorkels on have been in so much as a foot of water.

I once started back over Saddleworth Moor in an old Mini 1000.
It was snowing heavily, the Mini kept on going up the hill so I kept on driving.

When I got to the top there was only me, a Toyota Landcrusier, a snowplow and the Police.

I saw them turn the Landcrusier around then he walked up to my Mini.

"What the hell do you think your playing at "

Needless to say he wasn't impressed :D

Yeah but you don't buy an old Land Rover unless you at least intend to do even a little offroading, surely? I can't imagine them being desirable for their luxury, speed, handling or efficiency :p

That's my point; the very act of owning such a car is at least a precursor to having thought about driving in rough conditions. Not saying that everyone who owns one is a green-laning god, but if you have absolutely no interest or desire in leaving the blacktop behind, then you'd be driving something else anyway.

I must admit though, I hate seeing clean 4x4s. Seems a waste :)

The point the Police are making is that despite the capability of the vehicle, flood waters contain hidden hazards such as collapsed road surface, hidden submerged obstacles / debris and it's easy to get disorientated in water and end up off the road surface itself, all of these things heighten the likelihood of the vehicle getting stranded and the already stretched resources being wasted rescuing the driver in question. Resources that could be put to better use elsewhere.
Putting it another way, despite it having a much higher air intake than even a snorkel equipped Landy, I would not dream of taking my Scania HGV through obviously deep flood water for the very reasons I mention above.

Time & place for taking your 4x4 for a swim, I don't think this was the best of them. :)

Plenty of lorry drivers do go through that flood water ;)

There are ditches either side of the road in places, and plenty of the tree's beside the road have been felled recently with just small stumps. I was there the other week and kids where playing in the water on their bikes, whilst some bloke in his defender was treating it like a playground, not the safest thing to do.

I'm sure they do mate, it does not make it a wise thing to do though, imo.

It's all well & good until it goes wrong......

But thats your job and would be carrying stuff for someone.

This is this guys hobby.

I think they're just trying to dissuade the general public from deciding they're offroader gods and having legions of people get themselves in trouble thinking 'i could do that too' before promptly failing and requiring ridiculous amounts of money to go and rescue them solely due to their own stupidity or laziness.

That's probably a big part of it. You don't want some div watching that and taking their Rav4 out for a spin in that.

Going against the grain here but I agree fully with the police, yes the Disco was/is designed for that type of thing and that one obviously had a snorkel, but if the had been a dip in that road he would never have seen it and the whole car would have been underwater before he knew what had happened. It was very irresponsible and dangerous of him and putting a video of it on the internet just glorifies his stupidity.
