A brawl broke out on the M1 today after two black BMWs “racing” at 140mph crashed and two men died.

Four others were injured in the accident near junction five at Watford at 2.30am which led to lane closures and major rush-hour delays this morning. Five junctions of the motorway in both directions were shut although the northbound carriageway has since re-opened.

One witness said it was “like a plane crash” after the leading car clipped the central reservation and bounced off a bridge into the path of the second car.

The occupants who escaped the wreckage began fighting with the occupants of a third car which pulled up over who was to blame for the death of their friends.

Police today confirmed that the two men who died were aged 22 and 24 and believed to be living in east London. The men are understood to be from the Bangladeshi or Pakistani community.

Motorist Basit Nasir, said: “They appeared to be having a high-speed race.”

He said a five series black BMW went past him “about 140mph” closely followed by a seven series black BMW.

He told the Standard: “It was total mayhem. There was mangled metal everywhere. It was foolish of them to drive at this sort of speed. It was raining as well.”

He said four men in a silver Mercedes C220 pulled up at the crash scene and began fighting with their friends. The group is thought to have been in Luton for the evening before heading north to Milton Keynes before heading back to London.

Mr Nasir said: “They all jumped out and everybody started punching each other. They said, ‘What have you done? You have killed them.’ I tried to break up the fight and called the police from my mobile.

Four fire engines and six ambulances were sent to the scene. Two men in the leading BMW were pronounced dead at the scene. Their two passengers suffered “serious injuries” and were taken to St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington.

Two of the four passengers in the second BMW were less seriously injured and were taken to Watford General Hospital. It took firefighters about an hour to release all the casualties.

The names of the two dead men are expected to be released tomorrow by Hertfordshire police. Officers investigating the incident are appealing for witnesses to contact them on 101.

Today the southbound carriageway was expected to remain closed until this afternoon between junctions five and four at Edgware. This caused massive delays that stretched north to Hemel Hempstead and impacted on the M25.

Mr Nasir said he managed to help the front-seat passenger out of the five series BMW but he appeared badly dazed. The driver had been thrown across to the passenger side of the car and was “totally limp”.

He said one of the Mercedes passengers told him the reason their car was further back was because it had stopped at a service station to allow a passenger to use the lavatory.

“The conversation I had with the Seven Series driver was that they just went to Luton to see somebody, then they went to Milton Keynes. I think they were just on a night out.”

Not surprised, down here in East London every single night you have these 'boy racers' flooring it past residential areas. It's like a friggin' meetup. They tend to park their cars in the middle of the road causing congestion and then when they're all ready, they circle the area about 5-10 times over the area as if it is a god forsaken race circuit. This always happens around 8pm-2am. In Acton (West London) you don't hear any racing EVER. People over there know how to drive sensibly.

Whats even worse here is the people in the cars egging their friends on to drive like ****s will get compo from the accident.

Similar thing happened with my cousin, 8 of them in a citroen C15 van (6 in the back, no seats, no seatbelts) all thinking they are having a great laugh charging round Cardiff town center like a bunch of *****s.

The van clipped a curb, lost control, hit another car, the rear doors flew open and the lads in the back were thrown out, one was killed instantly, another one ended up with his head between some railings and was left in a permanent vegetative state...
My cousin ended up being impaled sideways on some railings and was lucky to survive.

Ended up with £28k compensation though for his injuries.

I saw those cars this morning. Two absolutely trashed BMWs that looked like they had rolled many times down the road. There was also a Mercedes that had been hit at the rear a little further down the road.

My observation from driving many miles in France and Spain is that after an accident, the old bill turn up, take a few pictures and drag the cars off the road and reopen ASAP. Why with the advent of modern technology do we have road closures lasting 6 hours or more in this country?

A death requires the accident to have a crash investigation. The entire area becomes a crime scene and can not be touched.
 
Can someone explain why the guys in the merc pulled up and starting fighting with friends? I can't seem to tell.

And most of this information could be captured digitally very quickly. We are suppose to be in the 21st Century... not the 19th .
 
Black BMWs should be banned.

I had one almost take me out last night on the M4 westbound. He joined the motorway (near Hungerford) and, at speed and from the slip road, immediately took up his position in the outside lane. I've no idea how he missed lane one and two traffic that I was overtaking.

Part of the investigation is to log the position of every mark and object at the scene. Then all the structures in the area have to be assessed and replaced if damaged. Until the cause is known and the repairs are complete it stays shut. This is one of the reasons why the motorway is one of the safest roads.
 
It just seems wrong that Brits have to sit in their cars stuck on a motorway for hours upon end stranded due to some morons that were racing. Why do we need to analyze how many times it flipped before Joseph McPunjab has died? He's dead. He's an idiot. Clear it up so we can all get to work. I have no sympathy what so ever I'm afraid.

It is incredible. These idiots should not have been doing what they did. The M1 is still closed southbound. The commute later could be fun...
