Brawl erupts on M1 as two are killed

Part of the investigation is to log the position of every mark and object at the scene.

Surely with modern technology this can be done in minutes? Network Rail manage to check railway track while doing 60MPH. Google manages to record a whole street in minutes with a fancy camera stuck on top of an astra.

Then all the structures in the area have to be assessed and replaced if damaged. Until the cause is known and the repairs are complete it stays shut.

If I'm not mistaken, we only have barriers down either side of the carriageway and mostly only down the offside. Why does a road have to be fully shut? For most accidents you only need to shut 1 or 2 lanes. Vehicles should be able to use the 3rd lane.

If we are talking about an accident which includes a fire or chemical spillage then I agree it needs to be shut but for this one, shutting the M1 for god knows how many hours is madness.

This is one of the reasons why the motorway is one of the safest roads.

And French and Spanish motorways are less safe?

They struck a bridge unfortunately. This kind of accident requires a specialist team to attend and the cause of the accident is determined as much as possible at the scene. This perhaps sets it apart from the rather more lazy/careless approach our friends across the channel take.

They will be looking further than just the speed. A full assessment of the road at the time, who did what and what were other cars doing at the time etc.. lots of variables to lock down. Saves the accident happening again. I know there is a sharp dip around that part of the M1, hitting that at 70mph can make you jump. Hitting that 140mph would be epic I imagine. That could be the cause of the accident. Or perhaps Mr Mercedes pulled into the path one of the BMWs? Lots of questions to answer.

The cars will also be taken away to be assessed to see if they caused the accident (but the road doesn't need to be closed for that).

Surely there's some error in communication here? How could a single crash with two vehicles shut down 5 junctions? That's what, 10 miles of motorway?

There must be some mistake, someone means "junction 5" (which is outside Watford) instead of "5 junctions". Or perhaps they are counting 5 slip roads at one large junction as 5 separate junctions?

Sad news. Alas that is the youth of today. I witness this type of thing everyday where I live, all the jap fanatics moved to their TDI Leon FRs/Golfs and drive like it's silverstone. It's terrible but we just don't learn. It's peer pressure and not thinking that you're putting lives in danger.

I feel more for the families that will grieve as losing your children, to their own foolishness is just atrocious. Countless times our young have died like this, and yet we still don't learn.

The cars are mangled wrecks. It's really sad.

That's the thing, they won't stop until either they kill someone or kill themselves.

Nope - the report is accurate, a large stretch of the M1 was closed this morning.

It is 5 junctions. 5 to 1. I drove past it earlier. Every junction was closed on the southbound. Not sure why.

If this goes on long enough, I guess they'll limit cars to speed limits in each country. Having the will to go to 140mph on a road which is what, 70mph restricted? That's twice the speed limit. God forbid, if there was to be a blow out, or fault in the vehicle what would happen? It might not have to be down to driver error.

I've done some silly speed in my life in a car. I had a friend who bought the same car, clipped a kerb, rolled it and died on impact. I learnt my lesson, now everyones buying these cars as they've become cheap/cheap to run, and pretty nippy for what they are. Yet they don't understand that not every vehicle is designed to go 10000mph and not every road surface will be the best. Neither will every component in the car, or drivers concentration.

It might not even be your fault, it could be another driver who hits you.

When I read this story in the morning, I instantly thought they must have been racing. To stereotype a little bit more, the cars in question and my thought on the occupants instantly went to, they must be Asian.

They have probably closed many junctions prior to the accident such that no one can join in to manage traffic. IE the last junction has more appropriate roads for the volume of traffic that will now be using that road.

Sounds like one of those 'what ifs' that actually happened. Someone moving over a lane ahead of the racing cars etc. Pure conjection on my behalf though!.

I would think they're going to determine the speed, signs of braking, tyre marks etc..

I think so too. It is still closed now, so they are clearly looking at a lot of things. The bridge strike is probably a concern too. I remember the fire near the bridge around junction 3. That closed that part of the M1 for a week. Luckily I was on holiday at the time.

Ah explains why someone off my Facebook said they have been stuck on the M1 since 5 this morning? He put this up around 3 hours ago aswell.

That is pathetic how they are keeping people stuck there since this morning. Regardless of what has happened.

It's the southbound road as you enter North of London on the M1 which is known for speeders. The road surface changes and countless times people have gone past doing 100+.
