What Headset/Headphone + Sound Card do you use for gaming and why?

I use the Tritton 510 and X-Fi Fatal1ty Pro. I have a 5.1 speaker setup too but the other half moans about the noise so I use the headphones when she is around. They are 5.1 headphones so not really different to the speaker setup. The sound card was good in its day and still pretty good now. Will look at a ZxR though.

I currently have the Sennheiser PC163D and PC333D headsets. I used to use a Creative X-Fi but the drivers lately haven't been that great with a lot of newer games so now either use the Sennhesier dongle or onboard via Realtek ALC269 (which is reasonably good).

Both of the Sennheisers have decent enough sound quality - head and shoulders above your average gaming headset and while not in the same league as a proper audiophile set of headphones they are very much more than adequate for getting nicely detailed, crisp ingame sounds with a reasonably good balance.

I prefer a headset for gaming as I do a lot of competitive FPS and eve online both heavy on the voice comms and a desktop or clip on mic really does not cut it for this despite what some people think :P the 333Ds are really good for this as the mic auto mutes when the boom is rotated to the rest position which is really handy but they are unfortunatly not the most comfortable for long term use which is where the 163s come in as they are a lot lighter and better balanced.

Xonar D2X and Sennheiser PC350/PC360 here (alternate between that and a 5.1 amp/setup)

I use the 350's at home as they're closed so block out surrounding noise, and use the 360's at LAN's etc. so I can hear people in the room

both give fantastic sound and I've had no comfort issues using both for extended periods of time

I always budget buy and always do a lot of research.

I use a Xonar DG soundcard as it is unbeatable for the money and far superior to onboard sound.

I have two headsets / headphones currently.

1. Creative HS-980 MarkII Fatal1ty headset. Very highly rated when it first came out and I still use it a lot for gaming as it is so comfortable and is closed back, so does not leak noise late at night. The sound is very similar to the Creative Aurvana Live! headphones, so I think it is built by Denon, as they are.

2. Panasonic RP-HTF600E-S headphones. I picked these up when reviews first coming out on Head-Fi and when they were only £26.99. They are £45 now as everyone has found out how good they are. Open back. Sound is really good on these things for both music and gaming. A real bargain.

:) im using a usb logitec headset that i got with my blackhawk down game for my ps2! works fine but would like a stereo headset at least.

Can anyone suggest a budget buy one, not looking for amazing performance, just has to do the job and be comfortable, the current one im using hooks over my ears and actual hurts :( if im having a long gaming session.

Thanks in advance

More than enough for my ears tbh and for less than 50 quid is a bargain. I had my doubts that a soundcard would be so much better than on board but it really is especially with headpones

Is it really that of a noticable change? Sorry for the naive question but sound cards have always been a no for me, with having my pioneer amp plugged into on-board.

Daft question, but legitimate. :p

it depends on your usage. i went from my hs800 plugged into onboard to the dgx at medium gaming setting and i was blown away by the difference ive not had a separate sound card since the old audigy 2 days as I thought the same as you that onboard was good enough, considering i went from an asus z77 sabertooth onboard to a dedicated asus card I too didnt think it would be as good as it was, I now see why they sell separate solutions

In your instance though your dac, assuming your optical to your amp, is in your pioneer amp so you probably wouldnt notice that much if any difference going to a dedicated card. If however your analogue to your dac or are running heaphones off the card itself then yes without a doubt for 20 quid get one

Its plugged in just through the basic green 'out' and black/red aux cables. Pretty basic really. Might go and check this out.

Thats analogue then. TBH depending on your amp and connections youd be better spending a couple of quid on an optical cable and cabling up that way to your amp if possible.

PC 350 and Asus D2X cos I had no idea what I was buying at the time and they both seemed really popular. The bass was nonexistant until I modded it by drilling in some holes and filled with cotton. Now they are great for games and decent for music though I prefer my speakers in that catergory.

I had a lot of those HS-800 but im getting put off by them all seem to break at the volume control area either side of it, I reckon i go replacing every 8 months.. :(
