What Graphics card to power 1600p with latest games

I was very luckily given a HP LP3065 today and I am going to switch from my Samsung 23SA700. I'm now concerned that my graphics card won't be able to keep up when playing the latest games.

I've got an MSI 6970 Twin Frozr card which has been great with BF3, Far Cry 3, Deus Ex etc at Full HD resolution but I expect it won't perform great at 1600p :)

Are there any cards that will give me similar framerates to what I am used to at the higher resolution?

Thanks

Turn down settings with a 7950 in certain games and you'll be set.

The AMD 7900 series cards are faster at higher resolution than their nVidia counterparts.

Can sell the 6950 to offset the cost as well as the games you'll get with the 7950 to make it a cheap upgrade. Plenty of extra performance too.

Thanks, I was hoping by selling my old monitor (only 12 months old) and graphics card it won't cost to much for the upgrade. I'll stick to the AMD cards if they are better at higher res, seem to be cheaper as well.

Yeah win win :).

If you need a hand picking a model then shout.

I think that 7970 may be voltage locked, you may as well go for the 7950 equivalent (I think most people seem to be saying that the 7950 WF is not voltage locked- unlike the 7970 WF which is) which will allow you to overclock past the performance level of that 7970. Plus you'll save £100, which you can put towards other goodies :)

I really wouldn't go for that one. It's voltage locked.

This one is usually on offer for around 300GBP with the free games. If you hang on a week you could probably get it for that price:

Alternatively, if you want a non-reference design, I'd go for:

I'm pretty sure it's not volt locked and it's also a GHz version so it should be better binned.

Thanks guys appreciate the advice been a little while since I got my 6970 and things seem to have moved on a bit!

Went for the Ghz edition in the end as you suggested, thanks again for the advice. Looking forward to hooking it up.

Played BF3 last night using my 6970 and actually handled the resolution quite well, although it struggles a bit with Far Cry3.

I still can't get over how awesome the extra resolution is :D
