Long story short, I may be moving from down south up to Newcastle Upon Tyne due to work. Now I know absolutely nobody who lives in this area and moving from to the other end of England is a bit daunting for me. Like all areas in the UK theres rough areas and half decent areas.

I'm currently looking at the cost of renting flats/apartment and was wondering whether there are any areas people would recommend avoiding?. Also any average area's people would recommend. I believe the business will be in the area of NE12.

I live in NE12, and it is mainly decent. Would look at Forest Hall, Killingworth, Benton, Palmersville. A lot of people like living at the coast - Whitley Bay/Tynemouth - but you will pay a premium for that. Who do you work for? There aren't many big companies in NE12 apart from the one I work for (though I don't actually work in NE12).

I moved (for studies) in September from the South.

Absolutely love it - the city is fantastic, big enough to have everything you need and small enough not to feel like a metropolis.
Half an hour outside the city, the area is beautiful. Stunning countryside.

I don't know the NE12 area, as I'm NE1, but it's awesome up here.

NE12 area is a huge number of possible areas.
Can you narrow it down a bit?
How much are you wanting to travel per day? you dirve or public transport?

South Shields where PhillyDee and myself are from is not far down the road, commuting distance and its property is quite cheap and we have beaches and parks :)

Dunno about cheap, its pretty pricey here compared to the more inland places. It all depends where exactly the OP is working (and days / times).

I thought prices were reasonable, but then again Im not really looking so probably wrong :)

Ah man I love Newcastle and surrounding areas. Cant wait to go up this weekend for a session :)

I've lived in newcastle for around 12 years and never had any trouble even though I apparently live in one of the "rougher areas"

What about me you nasty bugger?!?!!? Knew you didn't love me really!!

OP how old are you? If younger and you like partying you could try Jesmondo!

Are you purely restricted to NE12 kind of area or is that just your preference for work? Can you drive? Or would you be willing to go by bus/Metro?

I live in NE1 as well but down on the Quayside near the Millennium Bridge, so close enough to the city centre but far enough away it's not really that noisy. I have a friend that lives in Longbenton

What's been said before though I'd agree with, Newcastle is one of the nicest cities in the country as it has nearly everything you could want but doesn't feel over crowded and everyone in general is nice. I'm originally a Southerner as well.

Where in NE1 are you reppin' Tres? I know there are quite a few students in the building I live in. :)
