Newcastle Upon Tyne - Might be moving

Wow, over the moon in the amount of replies. Sorry for my late reply. I'm 19 and living in Southampton. Moving up Newcastle (If I do) will be probably one of the biggest decisions I've had to make haha. Leaving all family and friends behind :( but I suppose its only a 5-6 hours journey.

I have my car which I'd most likely be taking up there :) and I'm not really stuck to living in NE12 I thought I'd start looking around there as I'll be heading to Quorum Business Park Mon-Fri but would happily commute in Car/Metro/Bus as I currently do an hour drive to this job.

I've visited once so far just to check out the business park and the city centre loved it from what I saw. It's just the fact I know absolutely nothing other than it looks good and the metro is real easy to use haha, Other than that i'm just looking for advise/info on the place :)

Just looking at places now, I'm guessing Jesmond is the prime spot for students, lots of house shares around there and pretty cheap.
 
Quorum isn't too handy for the Metro, but it is well served by buses. From what I have seen parking is at a premium at a lot of the places there (was on jury duty and the bus route from mine into the city centre goes through Quorum) so being on a bus route might be handy. Killingworth, West Moor, Longbenton, Heaton would all give you an easy route to work. At your age Jesmond would probably be better as it's livelier. Loads of bars on Osborne Road, and walking distance to the City Centre. Commute would be ok as most people are hading into the centre and you'd be going the opposite way.

Jesmond is normally for young people in house shares, if you are up for that go for it, some lovely houses up there and dirt cheap.

If I was you I would stay as close to the centre as you can afford (and live in a nice area) as the commute on the metro is dire and if you're working in the centre it can be a pain!

Ah I see, I do remember hearing about a bus service which stops off at Quorum from one of the Metro stations. So that could be useful. As far as parking goes I haven't looked in to whether it would cost extra to park outside the building so I'll find out and weigh up the costs on travel.
 
If you want to be in Newcastle, Jesmond, Gosforth, Sandyford, High Heaton, Benton, then Heaton in that order. If you want somewhere really cheap, Fenham is great.

Nearer the coast Tynemouth or Monkseaton (where I am currently) are great. :)

If you are working at Quorum and drive then don't limit yourself to Newcastle as you will spend most of your time stuck in traffic. As someone else has already mentioned Cramlington is nice and is about 10 mins away straight dual carriage way all the way. Killingworth is even closer. If however you are looking for nightlife and just to generally dot around then being close to the metro line will be easier. Quorum is about 5 mins walk from 4 lane ends metro. As a sand dancer also although I love Shields it's the other end of the metro line and being on there for an hour a day each way is a pain.

There are buses from Four Lane Ends that go through Quorum.

Cramlington looks convenient :) A189 then A188 seems simple enough haha.

9 screen multiplex due to open next year too. Northumberland is to Newcastle what Surrey and Essex are to London, commuter belt. I guess. Kind of.

You wouldn't like Hebburn if you went, when the metro passes through they stop first to advise you to hide your valuables, then they duct tape up the windows and seal the doors :p


If you're 19 OP I'd go for a house share in Jesmondo as long as you are ok living with others. You'll meet people, great night out and also only a 5min metro ride to the city centre.


Also everyone bashing South Shields, pack it in! It is a lovely place and great for a night out (as long as you don't go too often! :D

Just checked out fixtures.....Newcastle v Saints on 23rd Feb, might try get a flight look at some accommodation and watch the game ;)
