Im thinking about getting one for a new rig to test it out and have a bit of fun.

I know there have been problems with the cards below, are they anywhere near being sorted.

Do both of these cards run @2560x1600 with DVI DL straight out of the box.

And if anyone reading this does not know me, I don't need a nvidia card.:D

The Lightning will only do 2560x via displayport, But out of the two, I'd go for the Lightning due to problems surrounding GPU Tweak and the matrix.

Sent you some more info in email too ;)

The ASUS card has DL DVI out the box; the MSI one doesn't you need to use DP -> mDP to get it or an adaptor.

I would say for overclocking they're both as good as each other on paper except.... the software you have to use for the ASUS cards is poor apparently according to those who have tried it. :(

You should go for a Lightning 680. Far superior to the 7970 in every way :p Joking aside, I would go for the 7970 Lightning. I did some looking around and these seem to be the best clockers.

I have the Matrix and its a very good card.
good clocker and runs cool and quiet.:)

However your software ltd to Gpu tweak which at the moment isn't the best.:(
New version just released still testing so it may have improved.

Also no blocks available for the Matrix(or planned for) :(

So with that I'd say Lightning has the edge IMO

If I get a HD 7970 I will be running it on air so that is not a problem and as people have said the Matrix comes with DVI DL.

What I am interested in is if the new GPU tweak software is any good.

Would've advised the Lightning BE Kaapstad if i'm honest.

GPU Tweak will never get fixed properly. I've used it for years as my last card was the GTX580 Matrix Platinum and it's buggy as hell in places.

Please note that there is only 1 DL DVI connector and also there seems to be a lot less successful overclock stories with the Matrix Platinum.

Apart from that, it's a stonkingly great card! So cool and quiet. Enjoy and please let me know how you get on with them, post up in the 7970 Matrix Platinum thread: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18453434&highlight=matrix+platinum

and any issues are worth posting on the ROG forums: http://rog.asus.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?24-ASUS-l-Republic-of-Gamers-Graphics

I think your right about the MSI lightning being the better option for overclocking.

The reason I went for the Asus platinum is the DVI DL and also my HD 5970s are showing their age (1gb vram). The other thing is I am never going to need to w/c these cards as they are not going in my main system. Even if they only end up slightly faster than a normal HD 7970 its not a problem and they will look good on my X58 R3E mobo.

After saying all that I will give them a blast on one of my X79 systems - I want to get into the top ten on gregsters 3dmark11 single table.:D

My fingers will be poised ready to type you up :) They are good cards and could be better with GPU Tweak running properly. The 7970 LTG's are great and 2 LTGs in the top 4 of 3DMark11 are 7970 LTG's.

I don't think I will manage the top 4 even with a big physics and combined score but the top ten would be nice.

I think it will also give me the opportunity to retire my err GTX 680. I don't think I can get much more out of it as it is allready hitting clock speeds over 1260mhz which is pretty good going for half a GTX 690. I think the cooling holds it back a bit at those speeds.:D

There are no, and will probably never be, any water blocks for the Matrix Platinum anyways.

If you knock me out of the top 10 then it looks like i'm moving my PC outside and doing a suicide bench.

I think I had better concentrate on the 2 GPU table then, the worst that can happen there is I knock myself down a place.:D

The lack of waterblocks is not a problem, with my old builds I tend to get quite attached to them and don't sell them on. This gives me the opportunitiy to move GPUs around between them to try different things, something that is only practicle with air cooled GPUs. Sometimes I find out things I missed first time round like my i7 980 is a really good overclocker so in the near future the CPU will get the water treatment.
