People that drive in the evening with no lights

A friend of mine used to drive around with his fog lights on all the time, got pulled by the police, claimed he didn't realise they were on, so they did him for driving without due care and attention. :)

I quite like the Saab system - they rarely (never?) fit auto lights but if you leave them on then they turn off with the ignition. Leave them on sidelights and the sidelights stay on and it bing bongs to warn you. Means at this time of year when your leaving for work in the dark and coming home in the dark you just leave them on. Not as good as auto lights but handy

Really?

I would like to see that in a court of Law. Just because you don't notice a tiny little light on your dashboard, does not automatically prove that you are driving without due care.

Moreover, in my car, its ALMOST impossible to tell when the fogs are actually or or when they are off, as neither of the buttons have a latched illumination, and the onboard computer display only shows the foglight status for a few seconds before totally disappearing.

So its perfectly possible to have them on by accident and be totally unaware. Hardly driving without due care and attention.

I would be very VERY surprised if the quoted post was actually true at all. Sounds like another internet story.

A year or so ago I was on the way to the airport, driving through our town centre we went past a police car at 4AM who hadn't got their lights on, we flashed them :).

I have known this to happen, although i think it was just a caution and not a penalty. having fog lights on without any fog can be quite dazzling and is pretty dangerous at times. I think its quite right for the police to do this especially if you are too stupid to notice.

Careless and inconsiderate driving would look like the most appropriate offence.

Is this thread about people driving with no lights on in a built up area where there is street lights?

If so, there is no legal requirement to have your lights on if I remember correctly.

It is however a recommendation that you do so.

The instrument binnacle in my Accord is permanently lit, turning my lights on just dims it.

I've been caught out with this in a new hire car I had one evening (fully dark)

I was on way to motorway (not on it thankfully) - and road was fully lit, and people kept flashing me and I was thinking to myself ???! -not sure what made me realise but suddenly I realised no lights on !!

on all cars I've ever owned myself - dash lights= on = at a minimum side lights are on

Seen quite a few people recently driving with no lights on when dark, also seen vehicles with HID mods which seem to throw light everywhere and blind you, one was behind me on the way home this evening and passed one yesterday.

What accident?, unless you tripped and fell on the switch without realising it after having taken the second or so it would take to check it was in the correct position?

I was always taught if it's dark enough to use sidelights then just turn your lights on, only time I've ever driven without lights is when I've been in a lit up area and not noticed immediately, got pulled for it one night at about 11.30pm in the middle of town, the officer was a proper gentleman about it and just asked me to turn them on before going any further after he had made the deduction that I wasn't drunk.

I know, but as he said, normally it's a good indicator that somebody has had a few, and I had no issues with getting waved over for it.

Used to see a motorbike learner doing this on my morning drive to work. I flashed him every single morning and he never twigged...

He was probably like oh hey it's that weird guy again *waves*.

Tonight it was people driving in local slow traffic with front/rear fog lights on so annoying :(

But personally I leave the lights set to Auto on my car and work van.
