what I need to know is will this scratch affect the cooling I know my water block and high end air coolers all have mirror finished lapped bases because more contact is better... I can feel this with my finger nail as I run over it which isn't a good think obviously but Im thinking the thermal paste should sort it out still or should I send it back to ocuk ?
 
it looks like a Stanley blade has been used on it which i can't understand with it being new =S i bought it as a oem version on ocuk site so it came in a tiny box which I was surprised at i didn't realise that's what oem mean't, It didn't bother me but the scratch does if its going to affect performance.
 
Get in touch with OcUK, they should honour this as an RMA and will replace it for you if you send it back.

well I've raised the issue with them in the customer support section, if they say it will be fine and my warranty remains valid I might keep it.
 
Shouldn't affect performance but it almost looks like its been clamped with a heat sink as there's a square faint mark around it.. Unless it's the picture.

Depends how badly you want it up and running was the box fully sealed?

Depends if that scrape will have any sort of impact on cooling with thermal paste? I doubt it would, but just to make sure :)
 
it came is a tiny cardboard box with foam padding as seen in the pic thats the box its in the rest of my new parts are not here yet so I couldn't start building anyway but i'd still rather not go through the hastle of RMA if its not going to make any difference.
 
thanks for that nitram its definitely going back the whole point of going intel this time was to try and achieve a really good overclock 4.6-5GHz if im lucky so It will be sent back.

This is what I thought at first. I also noticed how there are quite a few scratch marks on the first picture.
 
This is why I never buy OEM processors there is no guarantee that they haven't been used beforehand, it probably won't affect cooling much at all but I would send it back on principal... plus if it breaks 6mths down the line the store or Intel might turn around and say that you have physically damaged it and they won't honour the warranty.
 
Lesson learnt now about OEM I didn't know what the difference was between that and retail it dosen't really say on the page unless im just blind, So does OEM mean it could be second hand ? or just pre tested before its sent =S
 
It should still be new. Possibly the reason it was made an OEM chip due to the imperfect finish? Just to give you something else to think about, this "could" possibly be a golden chip that clocks better than a replacement. Of course that's just speculation but it is something to think about :p

OEM is the basics, the product itself. Retail is a nice fancy box with manuals which you won't read to make more money from you. Although it does have its benefits.

Take the i5-2500k.

Retail will come with a heatsink, manuals, a nice box, and a 3 year warranty.

OEM (which isn't available anymore) will come in whatever box, no heatsink, a 1 year warranty, but would have also cost around £10 cheaper.

I bought an OEM soundcard from OcUK and it come wrapped in bubble wrap along with the driver CD. That was it. Not that I had a problem with it.
