Bring Contacts + SMS from old phone to iphone?

Hi folks,

I've bought my missus an iphone 4 for xmas and she currently has an old LG KF600 (I think it's also called a Venus...).

What I need to be able to do and can't find out how, is somehow get all her contacts (the address book it's called on the KF600) and ideally her SMS messages as well moved over to the new iPhone. The contacts is the main thing really but the messages would be a huge bonus.

Trouble is that her current SIM will not work inside the iPhone - she'll need a new MicroSIM for the new iPhone. We're going to be basically moving her over onto a new PAYG account with the old number onto a fresh MicroSIM in the new iPhone and chucking the old phone and old SIM away (eventually).

We could somehow try to grab all that info via the data cable > USB. Or maybe a SIM card reader direct into the PC (which I don't have). Or some other way?

TL:DR: Need to get contacts + SMS messages from old phone > iPhone.

Any ideas? Would be hugely appreciated!

Cheers,

I've just seen that you can buy a microsim > normal sim adapter.

I guess I could then try the following:

1) copy all contacts and SMS from SIM > old phone
2) remove old SIM
3) place new microSIM inside adapter and place in old phone
4) copy all contacts and SMS from old phone > new microSIM inside adapter
5) place new microSIM removed from adapter into iphone and crack on

Could work...?

If the phone has some sort of sync software onto PC/Mac it will let you back up contacts or transfer them to a mail/contacts program (outlook, windows address book, contacts.app etc). Then export it into csv and import into something like gmail and sync that on the iPhone.

SMS messages are notoriously hard to move between phones from different companies in my experience. I generally sacrifice them when changing phones.

Yep I have found a win 7 compatible LG PC Suite which should allow me to do this. It'll probably be messy but at least it should work.

It does look like SMS messages are going to disappear.

The microsim adapter does look like an option though...

Thanks rp

FYI I am fairly sure a lot of modern phones don't store SMS on the SIM anymore (and contacts by default). I assume this is so you can store more messages (I am sure SIMs have a tinny limit for this)

yeh i doubt they'll be on the SIM. i think as long as we can get her contacts moved over that should be fine. i think she'd cry if she had to re-enter everyone's info!

:) I recently managed to get a few year old Nokia N85 contacts to iPhone using google sync. Maybe research that if you want a no wires approach.

Also on any other phone I would say Bluetooth the contacts between devices, but I am fairly sure iPhones have minimal Bluetooth functionality :(

Yes this one has Bluetooth! I might look into that too. Would save a lot of trouble but I'm not sure if you can actually send contacts via bluetooth... ooks like it might only be photos/videos/mp3s etc....

google sync looks interesting.

cheers!

ITunes lets you sync contacts with Outlook, Google Contacts or Windows contacts. If that helps once you have them off the phone?
