Help - Second hand XBox 360 or new WiiU?

^^ OK... The XBox Live Gold account would allow us to have 2 or more accounts/IDs?

Shame it's £30+ a year for that membership!

Yes you can have as many accounts as you wish however it will cost you 30quid a year per gamer tag you want gold for.

Good choice in my opinion, some good parental features on Xbox too (stop them accessing your violent games etc)

Hang on! So if both I and my son want to play online (using IDs), that'll be £60 a year??

make sure the account you make is 18+ or a lot of features you cant use..
like youtube etc

you can have multiple gamer tags on one account afaik

Can I set his account such that he doesn't get speech or text from internet users? ie: I don't want smut from teenagers coming down to him.

You can also get a Family Gold supscription for £70 per year, gives you Gold for 4 gamertags. There is a primary gamertag who controls the MS points allocation etc...

You could always use these for any other kids or even give to one of your kids friends so they can play online, whilst being able to play over Xbox Live yourself.

I had this until recently when the Mrs decided she didnt need a Gold sub to play Lego games :p

My kids Xbox live account has his correct age (10) so he cannot access EA servers, FIFA for example. So the spare account we had was used by my son for such events.

£70? If I have to pay that (or much more than £30 a year) to play online I'll consider not even picking this XBox up, and instead getting a WiiU as the price difference suddenly shrinks!!

Someone just told me we don't have to pay anything to play online? It's only if you want specific IDs and recorded achievements that you need to pay?! Maybe they meant only one person needed a Gold account, and then co-op (other) players could join for free as guests? So that means only one Gold account per year?

With that scenario I guess we'd create a single household account with Gold and then other players could just guest in?

Have a look here to see what the gold sub gets you: http://www.xbox.com/en-GB/live/join

I take it a PS3 is out of the question?

Yes, so it would seem we'd need a single "Gold" account in effect representing the house hold? And then I'd hope if someone else wanted to play online to co-op for example, then they'd just be a guest player.

£30 a year is a pain, but OK!

PS3 - Don't see any deals as good as £169 for a 250Gb XBox (with 2 games) for the PS3. Plus my son's friends have XBoxs.

£199 for a 500gb with GT5 and Uncharted seems to be pretty good going at the mo for a PS3, given that you don't pay the £30 subscription for online play.

Regardless if your son wants an xbox get an xbox.
It's a great machine and you will be able to pick stuff up cheap for it.
I believe it also has very good built in parental controls: http://support.xbox.com/en-GB/billing-and-subscriptions/parental-controls/xbox-live-parental-control

Not sure on the current state of online 'guest' play but back when I dabbled with it the guest was essentially that, progress and achievements for them weren't saved anywhere on the console but they got to play online along side the gamertag which had the Gold subscription.

Tempting, but I think I'll stick with the XBox for £169, if only because I know it will be the more solid experience... ie: Never hear of frame rate drops on the XBox...

That sounds OK...

Get your gold from here:

It's worth noting that when you create your gamertag, you'll get free access to xbox live for a month (remember to take your card details off live - saves any hassle with your son or whomever buying xbox live points). So you can always try it out to decide whether it's worth while you going for a full subscription or not.

OK.. Thanks for the linkage! 13months for £30 makes it a bit more tolerable :)

It doesn't make it more tolerable at all, especially when you see what you get for similar money with PS+.

I'm enjoying my 360 but imo the PS3 is easily the best console this generation, and more importantly the most diverse, especially if your looking for a console for the whole family at the right price.

BTW: I picked up a 160gb PS3 recently from Sainsbury's for £165.

Xbox live is far superior to the PS+. But you'd expect it to be like that as it costs.

You also get added extras like Sky through the xbox, which the PS3 doesn't have.

Question. Does the XBox have a photo viewer/browser that's any good?

Can you give it a network location for a NAS (that it will remember) and it will allow you to browse your folders/photos nicely/quickly?

Far superior it is not, better due to cross game chat yes but apart from that there really is very little difference.

Sky is a plus but at a cost, and if you really want Sky you really should be getting it installed (unless you live in a flat/can't have a dish). The PS3 has PlayTV which although it only being freeview is free (adapter can be picked up now for £10-15) and very easy to use.

I've enjoyed the 360 for the time I've had it, playing some of the exclusives etc but coming from the PS3 the 360 seems to be lacking in a few area especially the dashboard as it's a complete mess :(

I steal my sky from my old man! I live in a new estate where we're not allowed dishes up. Boooo.

I like the new dashboard?! Oh well, lets be honest, neither of us are going to win this debate. Both have their plusses, both have their issues. Either console you'll get, your kid will have fun with!

Dont you have to pay to update PlayTV?
