Members Track car discussion thread.

I'm quite interested in this sprinting malarkey. You got some links to the events you attend? I'd be primarily looking at the requirements to partake as much as the costs involved etc.

Talking about sprinting, what circuits are available in the Midlands?

Do you need a race license to compete/run, can you hire the place for the day etc? Sprinting has always interested me more than your normal track day as I feel the slower speeds, harder breaking and short acceleration bursts make them a lot more fun.

Plus the competitive element, which doesn't (shouldn't, we weren't racing, honest Mr Marshall, sir :D) exist at track days.

National B MSA License is minimum requirement depending on vehicle etc, but there's no test requirement at this level. About £33 a year registration from what I can see.

There appears to only be a handful of requirements for the car; far fewer than I anticipated. The personal safety equipment means some upfront cost (FIA approved race suit and gloves as well as Snell approved helmet) but after that it appears you're virtually good to go. I'll be looking into this in more depth over the coming months I'd imagine but I need to familiarise myself more with the car before I commit to anything!

It's also worth pointing out that the sprints we compete in are not associated with the MSA so our requirements are slightly different. (Our events are actually run by Javelin so we know Colin and the guys pretty well.)

License wise we have a requirement for an "IOPD" license, although it's not really a licence as such it's more protection against various legal issues. Getting one is a simple case of filling out a form and either paying £20 for the season or £5 for a single round.

For car requirements, our series is geared towards road cars so there are very few 'requirements', broadly speaking if it's road worthy and safe you'll be able to run it.

PPE requirements are basically at trackday levels, A motorsport approved helmet is a requirement as are gloves and covered arms/legs

So no need for plumbed in fire extinguishers and roll cages and such?

Just a road car with an MOT level of operation, certified safety gear and helmet, and a £20 licence?

Why am I not already sprinting!

I would love a track car. When i eventually finally bring my self to actually sell my Astra VXR, i will be out to buy a track car to play with.

Probably budget around £2k for a dedicated track car depending on whats about.

Some great work guys! Thought a thread like this would be popular.

Exactly :)

Regs for the series we are in can be found at www.toyotasprint.com. Yes it's called the Toyota sprint series but there is a 'class X' for non-Toyotas :)

Wow Housey, the MX5 is looking good. Would love to get back on the track soon - need to buy some APs for my M3 first.

It looks lovely and is a lovely build by Matt at Tracktoys, but it needs a new engine as the stock 86k miler is pretty dead and really it needs a 2K race engine rebuild to be competitive, some more weight taking out of it and a serious set up as I offed it proper and the steering is at 20 to 2 when going straight ahead.

I dont really have the time (or talent) to do it all myself hence why it sits in the garage until I can justify spending on it.

My old Impreza. Bought as a daily as I always wanted one since I was young.

First thing to go were those garish BK rims for some stock WRX wheels.

And then I got hold of some Carbon wings for a good price, the plan being to go full carbon on the front end.

Coilovers and a set of track wheels with decent tyres were next.

And then I went a bit insane, stripped it, and painted it RAF Blue/Grey.

I did have some fun in it but things changed and it had to go.

I'd really like to get in another one at some point in the future, preferably an STi this time though as I only had the UK2000.

Sprinting is relatively cheap, at £100 per round it competes with a track day, plus you would use less fuel and be easier on the tyres and brakes. Racing is a different story, entry fees vary from £500 upwards, plus there's the extra mods to the car, and your ARDS licence to factor. And the risk that someone could crack into you off the start line and all is lost.

The supercharged engine is based on the 1.6 n/a standarad mr2 engine, and is a production model.I believe we are at about 160 brake at the mo although there are options to put on bigger pulleys for higher output. Fom memory a standard n/a is 120 but Phil might come along and say I'm totally wrong ;)

£500 seems a bit high for race entry fees. The Formula Ford is around £200 a race. Sprinting is a great way to get into competetive track action though.

Can't you have that ridiculous backfiring mapped out? I couldn't watch more than 1 minute of that video it was so annoying.
I just watched the video and turned the sound off. Doesn`t it get REALLY irritating from the cabin, never mind noise issues on track ?

Some cracking static shots of the Clio.

Ahh the memories, would still have mine if I hadn't moved to Australia, most fun/best car I have had. Mine had brand new OE suspension all round and was a fantastic example.

Knowing that as standard the car doesn't stand up to track work, I then fitted a 16 row Setrab oil cooler, Mocal braided lines and Mocal thermostatically controlled spacer plate. I also changed the oil for Millers CFS 10/50.

I used a set of the standard "cyclone" wheels fitted with R888s on track these are fairly heavy but kept the OE looks.

Oulton Park.

Put a front OMP strut brace on, and got a CG Lock for the seatbelt to hold me in place.

Went to Cadwell Park too.

Caught on video!

Drove fantastic as a standard car, little slow to change direction on track due to the standard suspension setup, but this was so compliant on the road, excellent ride quality.

Regularly threw my mountain bike in the back and took it to North Wales, did trips to Ikea, managed plenty of miles in the snow, and took it down when I was part of the audience at Top Gear (where it was one of the most "petrol head" cars).

An FF would be slightly more expensive than our MR2 though!!
