New bidder on eBay - should I be worried?

DO NOT ACCEPT PAYPAL FOR COLLECTION ITEMS!!!!!

Chargebacks are a matter for Paypal. Paypal like to shout and rave about hos good they are but have a read of all their terms and conditions and you'll end up thinking WHAT?!?!?!?!

You always have the option to set buyer requirements on your auction for minimum feedback and refuse new members.
Also the auction and Paypal fees are so high now that its not worth using those channels to sell anything. Some things you would be better off giving away from free via schemes like freecycle.

Rubbish. If you are paying to sell things on ebay then you are doing it wrong.
Go on, enlighten us?

100 'free' auctions a month.
Use html to insert pictures into the auction description.
Start auction at 0.99p

SO how do you sell a car for free?
SO how do you set a reserve price for free?
SO how do you start the bidding at a certain price for free?
SO how do you avoid final value fees?

If it costs you to sell an item then you are doing it wrong.
If you aren't as thick as I'm thinking you are then you will work it out :)

Thats not an answer.

SO go on, how do you sell an item on an eghay auction from start to finish with people bidding on it, winning it then being able to leave feedback (as per the auction process) without incurring any costs?

...

On freecycle you give stuff way for free...the clue is int he name.

On eBay you get money (some of which to don't keep).

Some money is still more money than no money...

Yes, thank you, I did know that. ;)

So if it takes you an hour (15 minutes setting up the auction - 45 mins packing the item and taking it to the post office) to sell something on ebay for £5.
Then you lose 3.4% on paypal fees, 10% on final value fees and as long as you managed to list for free, you are left with around £4.14.

It boils down to how much you value your time, in this scenario your time is worth £4.14 per hour, not even minimum wage.

Freecycle, 10 mins, someone collects the item, they are happy, you are happy, back to the tv to continue watching I'm a celebrity... :D

Ugh, I can't edit the item description. Do they stop you from doing this after a certain amount of time?
Yes, once you receive a bid on your auction you cannot change the original description.

You can add to it and it appears as a new section/paragraph at the bottom.

Right, so this newly registered bidder won the auction at about 930pm last night.

I sent him an email instantly saying cash on collection only and any Paypal payments would be refunded. No word from him yet though.

Ok, give them a bit of time.

If you need the item gone then maybe send them another message later asking them to contact you - consider giving your mobile number asking for a call.
COmmunication is key on ebay. From personal experience, some people don't respond to ebay messages at weekends as they signed up from their work email and don't get them till Monday. Some people are also rubbish at replying to messages. Neither helps if you are a seller with a collection only item.

Incidently, did you try any free local classifieds like Guumtree or the local rag?
