Is a Corsair 650 watt enough for xfire 7970?

Okay what would you recommend, is 750 enough?

Yep it is but if you go for a big overclock, you will be pushing the limits again.

For example, I put 1.45V through both of my 680's and 1.5V through my 3930K and have a water pump and 7 fans running. When I checked at the walls power monitor, I was pulling 1150W at times when benching.

With a minimal OC, I was pulling 800W. I am no expert on PSU's or know much at all if I am honest but you can see what I was pulling.

Are you sure that's a direct translation from your computer, maybe 1150 is really only 700. a lot of people say 1000watts is total overkill. I think 800 is the max.

My 4.5GHz 3570k @ 1.25V and a 7970 at 1150/1600 draws about 320W from the socket (running Heaven). 209W in Prime95 with just CPU @ 100% load. So that would make me think GPU draws about 200W, so I think you would be fine but would ideally have a 750W or higher. Depends how overclocked I guess.

Does the above posters power consumption take it from the wall socket including speakers monitor etc? Or just pc?

TBH I have a 600W BeQuiet PSU, I would be totally happy to add another 7970 to my rig and would expect it to run fine.

No idea. As I said, I have no clue to power usage but with my big OC, it said 1150W. The only external power also going through was a monitor and speakers.

Edit:

Just to add, I ruined my 1050W PSU and put my 750W Antec TP back in while I was waiting for a new PSU to be delivered and anytime I tried to bench, I would get the RSOD (which for 680's means not enough power). I am not talking massive overclocking btw, just normal benching with no over volting.

I have a £10 energy monitor plugged into the multiplug for my pc, monitor and speakers was over 100W for both of mine.

I think it's my speakers that use the most of it tbh, they are old Logitech Z-680's I might be wrong though, but I recall it being 80-100W at least. The sub on it is rated at 188W or something. Maybe less for people with less power abusing speakers.

A few of the guys here know far more than me when it comes to PSU's Nate, so wait before pulling the trigger on a new one. :)

What's the worst that can happen if he tries to run 2x7970 and his PSU can't put out the watts, I thought it would just shut down or turn off? Do PSU's get overloaded and pop if you draw too much power? With that in mind I think a 650w should cope fine, I would go for it on my 600W anyway.

it would crash the pc when under heavy load, overheat the psu which could make it fail ect

650w is pushing it imo, even with a quality unit,it might run fine for years but that depends on how brave you are

plus it will be noisier due to it working harder than a larger power supply

The PSU is one of the cheapest components in a PC but also one of the most important, spend the extra and get a 750w or even 850w one.

Running 7950/70 CrossFireX@1GHz/[email protected]/16Gb/2XHD/2XSSD/6X120 Fans/Khuler+2x120/Fan controller/DVD-RW on a Seasonic 750W(Seasonic produce Corsairs PSU's).

Stable at 1Ghz but I can't currently oc the 7950 DD any higher due to heat on the core(hopefully it's getting sorted soon) as the DD is useless with high clocks.

Personally I wouldn't like to try a 650W for 7970's especially if your going to clock them, as you won't be able to sell your 650W if you blow it, I would go for a 850W job if your buying to make sure it's all stable.

A nice 850w will give you plenty of headroom I would say.

If I'm honest I'm not sure ny hx1000 will be up to a 1.5v cpu oc and dual 7970's at 1.4v.

That was my power draw on 3D11 with 1.3v going through the cards.
750w from the wall is actually only about 600-650w from your PSU.

Meaning your current PSU is fine, but running a PSU at near maximum capacity isn't the best way...if you've got the spare money - upgrade to a decent 750-850w PSU. If not, shouldn't worry too much as the Corsair units are pretty decent.

Agree with Tonester0011 above.

I would think you can probably get away with it on the Corsair 650W so long as you are not artificially stressing them to max load with stress programs, but because it would be near max load, the PSU fan would most likely be spinning at max speed and become very loud. Should ideally you should have a 750W or above PSU.
