Are you proud of what you do?

I'm not so much proud of what I do as much as I'm proud that I'm good at it and more qualified than any of my colleagues despite being half their age.

A job's a job. Taking pride in it and doing it to the best of your ability are more important than whether or not you're proud of it imho. I find a lot of people are disapproving of what I do and I don't understand why. I've even had the odd potshot taken at what I do by members of these forums. :)

Something that's struck me lately whilst out and about is that when people ask me where I work/what I do, I feel like my explanation is almost an apology. :D I'm in the financial sector, so sometimes get disapproving looks and a critical turn in the conversation (as if us IT bods get mahoosive bonuses!).

My son is in IT in the financial sector at Canary Wharf. He loves it but is always moaning about being underpaid.

I'm in MLM. The ignorant run a mile - which suits me. But those working with me, building their future financial security, would have it no other way :D

You don't want to know how obscene our pricing is :D

Damn you drive a hard bargain. Okay, a fiver, but my kids won't eat this year I hope you know that. Seriously though, I've only recently started to look into advertising for my book and, cor blimey, it is surprisingly expensive!

Unfortunately, the amount of experienced people out there who are still looking for work has driven wages down in recent times. There is still good money in it if you're in the right niche. Tell him not to give up. :)

You want to see recruitment advertising. Full page in the MEN goes for nearly £20k  Even the little ads are nearly £400 for one day. There's usually room to negotiate though, seeing as it's only space on paper. If you commit to a period of advertising, and are booking a reasonable size ad you should at the very least wangle some free colour and a bit of discount for multiple weeks.

I am fairly ashamed of what I do for a living. Fortunately I can be vague when people ask and simply tell them that I "work in IT", which is enough for most people to change the subject.

When I was massively overweight I used to tell people I was a model, just for "the lulz". Usually it'd elicit at least a nervous chuckle, and it was much less embarrassing than admitting to working on a helpdesk.

Not really, but I'm proud of what my new company does, the extent of products around the world and the level of technology is incredible (we manufacture Carbon fibre and composites amongst other things..

I often struggle to make my job sound like a real job. I'm a games programmer.

Did you start programming from general interest/hobby or for the purpose of a job? I'd assume interest/hobby, as is with most programmers - what I'm wondering is, has it killed yir love for programming? I would LOVE to be a programmer, having done so for years, but one quote that has put me off it is "never mix your hobby with your job", I would not work on any of my own projects etc anymore I think.

Is the pay reasonable? If you don't mind me asking!

I work in benefits for a local council, I do like that I get to help people who are struggling, such as those who have just lost their jobs and fallen on hard times.

But there are lots of the typical "benefits" type people who feel they are entitled to everything without putting in any work and what we give them is never enough.

Unfortunately there are a lot more of the latter than the former, so no can't say i'm particularly proud of what I do.

I am happy to have a job though and the pay isn't terrible. I have a Computing degree and this was my first job out of uni, think it's time I started looking for a decent job related to my degree.

Proud always reminds me of freddy got fingered when he went all nuts with the cheese.

I am definitely not proud about working for law firms, who knows what sort of evil *******s the law firms i work for have help and defended.

I know for one that i have worked for law firms that have dealt with some dodgy companies like military contractors and oil companies operating in the middle east.

But most of the time it is probably just no big deal clients.

I am proud of what i have achieved so far considering where i could have ended up. But being in IT i can at least claim plausible deniability over the operations of the clients that i work at.

One when i was working for an investment bank i got a call from a banker female who was getting spammed by environmental activists and she wanted help in blocking their emails because she wanted to invest in biofuel project in some third world country and the activists were saying that it causes food shortages. I was not too comfortable with that situation.

I have had a few instances like that at law firms but nothing that has made me uncomfortable or gone against my principles.

Well I've recently gone from working in Asda to being an IT apprentice,
At the moment the wage is horrendous as i'm only an apprentice. Hopefully once my year is up i'll get onto a decent wage with a decent-ish job

I work in IT, no one believe me they always think I'm a doorman... I like it when I say I work in IT and the person that asked also works in IT then we can have nerdy conversations about BizTalk.
