Open University - Who's doing it?

I was considering transferring my credits from previous study, but I cannot seem to add any of the April/May/June courses within the Module Selection Page, once you have selected the Open Degree Pathway.

You're probably choosing the worst possible day to do it, as all the systems have gone **** up today with the changes to the website/registration process. Best thing I can recommend is to ring 0845 300 6090 and talk to them about it although the phones are probably really busy.

How many people have transferred in other study?

I've got the 'issue' that none of my previous study really relates to doing management/business. I'm thinking it could be worth chucking them in though to replace the 'optional' modules I have for my degree.

My previous study that I think could be valid is

HNC in IT at Gloucestershire Uni

and then... what I'm not sure could be valid ....

- PRINCE 2 Practitioner
- ITIL courses (V2 Foundation, V2-V3 Bridge, ITIL V2 Practitioners (in Problem Mgmt, Incident Mgmt & SD, and then Service Level Mgmt) and ITIL V3 'Practitioners' in Service Transition), but just signed up to do ISEB Specialist in Business Relationship Mgmt, CSIP and Service Strategy. I'll probably do MALC in October making me an 'ITIL Expert'.

... Just making a start on my EMA for BU130.... 2400 words to go !

Anyone here doing open university degree having studied before? I did start to do a degree and was forced to stop back in 2010, I now want to go back and actually finish what I started via the ou. Will I still be able to get the funding help due to the fact iv'e studied previously?

Damn, looks like its too late to get on the old fee structure. I should have started a degree last year when I first had a look at the website :(

I want to do a course with OU, but I am not sure on what direction to take.

I have started my own business in music promotion and I put on a music festival, so want to do something related to that. I had a quick search but nothing in particular springs out to be related except maybe doing the Open Degree in Business and Management?

Meh. Guess I need to think harder and work out which one works!

Wow I haven't posted in this thread in ages lots of replies!

TU100 is going well, about 2/3 of the way through it; some interesting materials, some not so much. Really looking forward to MU123 starting in the next few months. :)

I have done M150, T175, MU123, MST121 (level 1) and T224 (level 2).
Currently doing M255 and T215.

I find the "T" modules in IT a bit too simple - writing based and find the "M" modules more logic based.

MU123 was pretty easy; only just above GCSE in terms of difficulty. MST121 on the other hand is also level 1 but was definately harder than A-Level standard maths when I did it.

I am glad I started the OU when courses were (and still will be due to transiation phase) circa £400.00 = <£5k to get a degree; from September onwards it will cost double that amount.

Yep you and me both M255, that's Java, right? If so that is what I will be starting in the new year.

How have you found it?

Yep, Javascript, although I think it may be getting replaced with a similar course, M250.

It isn't too bad, in my 4 assignments I averaged about 93% or so. The assignments each cover a block of 3/4 books of 60 pages each with activities using an OU IDE.

Got an exam on Monday and despite my assignment scores I'm not overly confident replicating that in the exam, as although 40% is multiple choice the remaining 60% are assignment questions on steroids.

Overall I enjoyed it, seeing code in action.

Just hope I can get 75% (2.1) in the exam as with the OU the exam is what sets your grade.

I'm finding TU100 to be quite lacking in depth, very broad much not much depth, can't wait to finish.

Doing the Visual Basic module in September.

Has anyone done 'Politics, Philosophy and Economics' or 'Economics and Mathematics' with the OU? I'm trying to choose between the two at the moment. The problem I'm having is simple - PPE sounds really interesting, but assessment seems to be essay-based(?). Essay writing was something I was terrible at in school. That was a long time ago now, and since then I've written for a few gaming/tech websites. I'm still a bit nervous about the essay thing though, I guess it's fear of committing to this degree and then not being able to manage the essays...

On the other hand, Econ & Maths plays in to my strengths from school. I was always good at the science/maths subjects - it came naturally to me. I'm a bit rusty, but the 'Gentle Start' pathway should put that right. Job prospects (in terms of pay check) seem a little better with this degree, though a little bit more narrow in terms of possible roles. What bothers me with is the 'and Mathematics' bit. Obviously Economics is maths-heavy. I have no problem with that. However, I have no intention of doing a maths degree, particularly not if it's taught as 'pure' maths. Is this the course format? Learn the maths, learn the economic theory, then bring the two together?

I'm suspecting the Econ & Maths degree is as I think it is and that I'd be better off doing PPE (which probably isn't half as bad as I'm expecting)?

The economics and mathematical sciences degree has 150 credits of economics and 210 credits of maths study so it's definitely more maths than economics.

In terms of assignment writing for the PPE, the degree will ease you in to the assignments and basically build you up to write bigger and bigger essays.

Hi guys,

Hope alls well. I have a question. I have already registered for Octobers BU130: Working and learning: developing effective performance at work http://www3.open.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/course/bu130.htm, and am considering studying a second 30-point module side-by-side in order to speed up my degree (6 years is a long time). That module is DB123: You and your money: personal finance in context http://www3.open.ac.uk/coursereviews/course.aspx?course=db123

As background, before I started this degree (which is required for work if I want to progress) my employer kindly changed my working hours so that I work 80% and study 20% (I get 1 study day allocated per working week). My job is tough (Auditing for a global financial services firm), but the dedicated study day really helps.

So, do you think that with those conditions that two 30-point modules, specifically those above, should be manageable side-by-side? I’m not looking to take anything major in the way of holidays during this time (I just got back from a month in Thailand), and I have some holiday left that i can use to add extra study days. In terms of studiousness and motivation I am Mr. Average, i’m no swot, but not a complete slouch either.

Would appreciate hearing your thoughts, especially from those who have done similar. :)

Dont mean to bring up a old thread but at least im using the search function.

Im currently just under halfway through my TU100 which is going okay at the moment. Although im getting abit stuck on Scientific notation and ended up getting the question wrong on my assessment. Any tips on this would be fab. I had the following question (although numbers have been changed around since i dont want to purger myself).

Calculate how long it takes to download 124KB file over a 44.16MBPS connection using Scientific notation and give the answer to 3 s.f

What i did was convert to bytes and... well got confused lol.

Anyone else doing TU100 this year?

You sure both are in bytes? Most of time connection speeds are in bits. If they are in bytes then Id convert the connection to KB (x1024) and divide the file by that...

Scientific notation is easy - just make sure the main answer is between 1 to 10 and the exponent is just the amount of times you moved the decimal place left (positive exponent) or right (negative one).

Remember the final answer is still in seconds - so write those as the units

I recommend googling khan academy, might help you graphically regards scientific notation...

ps3ud0

I finished a degree in Information Technology and Computing with the OU earlier this year. OU was totally the best way to do it for me - despite the fact it took seven years, the part-time thing made it more manageable. My tutors never minded what approach I took to doing the TMAs as long as they were in on time - some times I'd submit them weeks early, sometimes it was ten minutes before they were due. Some of the groupwork you won't have any other choice than to wait for, though.

And that is worth say less then a HND.....

What a stupid degree name, IT and Computing are such wide statements and can cover over 10 various degree's... the knowledge you would have got from that is pointless....
