When did "banter" become such a big thing? Heck what even is "banter"?

I used to be out all time when I was single up until five years ago I never really heard anyone talk about banter. Since bring shacked up I still get out once a month and always get to birthdays etc but just recently it seems everyone now goes on about "banter."

X has good banter, Y has **** banter. Apparently my "banter" is **** too according to some of my extended social circle :p

What is banter and why is it so important? Do you have good banter? I'm genuinely miffed, though I don't particularly give a toss and won't change I would like to know what everyone is on about! :p

A bit of banter between friends

Normally means, he just ****ged him off but it was in a funny way

I do it a lot and get some giggles and some good come backs too
, broadens the mind i say old chap

seems like everybody is purposefully trying to speak/act more working class.

e.g. that fat tongued **** jamie oliver.

So it's to obvious to say "you can take the **** well"

What a way to put tinfoil on **** :p shame it wasn't socially cool to rip the **** back in the day when that's all I used to do :p

It's a form of bullying, picking on the weakest in a group while presenting a friendly face. When the victim snaps, the aggressor dismisses his jibes as merely "bants" and claims to be the injured party.

Football fans use banter as a smokescreen for abuse. It's a form of conversation lads use so there is no reason to worry about it. :p

'banter' always used to mean as the dictionary definitions given above, essentially mild **** taking between mates, colleagues etc.

Now people seem to use it in completely daft ways like 'last night was well banter', 'daves party was proper banter mate' which is just beyond retarded and I don't understand :p
