Banter

No. The Gap Yah video preceded TOWIE and was the cause of the explosion in the use of the word 'banter' for everything. TOWIE starting in October 2010, the Gap Yah video being from February 2010.

You are missing what I said, it doesn't matter who started it, thats not what I'm saying. I'm pointing out the reason why it is currently so regularly used.

Gap Yah is a video on YouTube which I'd never even heard of until you mentioned it, and I do use YouTube a lot. I would imagine that most of the television watching audience in this country also haven't heard of that. They have however seen it used on what is a hugely popular television show which often commands a large audience share and its because of this, that so many people have been using the word banter in the same way they do.

Do you see?

Most of the television watching audience in this country will never have watched TOWIE, and definitely won't know any of the 'things' they do on the show - it's not a widely watched show. Do you see?

But as I already pointed out myself, I don't watch TOWIE, but I know full well that they use the term 'Banter' all the time on the show. There is also little way to avoid it when they crop up on others shows, such as panel shows and are regularly in the likes of the Daily Mail. I have never even heard of Gap Yah until now....

It's not as watched as the big shows in this country which pull in the top figures like Eastenders, Coronation Street, X-Factor, Strictly etc...

But given that they had an audience of 1.33 million, a 6.8% audience share in its slot, that makes it a very successful show for ITV. You can quite quickly see how many people will have seen TOWIE and its 'stars' elsewhere, where as that is not the case with this YouTube video.

Girlfriend has you whipped? Does she not let you out anymore? ;)

This sort of stuff is what I would consider banter. Light hearted **** taking which can't really offend unless someone is hyper sensitive.

The majority just seems to be acting a **** though and using it as an excuse for it. (not saying this happens in my case, just a general observation)

Most definitely a public schoolboy (rugby club) thing that I first heard around 2005 while at university... From my impressions it can range from mercilessly ripping the p*ss out of the whiping boy of the group until they are perilously close to commiting suicide to a 'bit of fun' in the lads changing room trying to whip each other's scrotum sacs with a rolled up towel.

I thought it was just something that they used on that Geordie Shore programme. I would have expected you of all people to know what it meant No1newts :)

Banter is just taking the mick...I used to go out with a bunch of guys where it was more like abuse.

It was good natured, completely demoralising abuse.

Banter is what a bunch of good mates do when they're all together. It's good natured mickey taking, nothing more. Is there a new meaning to the word that I'm not aware of?
No that is the meaning of banter and very well defined good fellow.

Banter is light heart conversation often laced with tongue in cheek comments and mild **** taking, but more importantly all parties are participating towards each other. Just 5 mins on my teamspeak server will clarify. Having said thay because we've all been gaming as a group for 5 years sometimes the banter gets quite harsh but no-one takes it serios.

We've just adopted another 12 people into the fold and the banter has calmed a bit so we can judge whats acceptable banter so not to offend

It's not about where it came from, or who claims they started using it first. As anticonscience pointed out, the use of the term's current popularity has come from TOWIE, which sadly is one of the most watched and imitated shows in the country. Which in itself is amusing, because TOWIE of course wasn't the first of such shows, but has been much copied ever since.

Exactly :)

Err, banter's a word - it's in the dictionary and everything. Sure, it might get used incorrectly by some people, but then so does 'Hoover'.

Had 'banter' for years. Generally in a work environment to make the day go faster.

I'm pretty damn sure it was widely used as a phrase before this 'gap yah' video that I've just watched for the first time and wish I had never bothered. Also pretty sure TOWIE has little to do with it either.

Although I am in Scotland. Maybe I'm just used to Glasgow banter and now 20+ years later it's catching on elsewhere?
