I'd say it was more likely a DNS issue, rather than a DOS attack. If it were a DOS attack, no matter what address you were getting you'd be unable to connect due to IP's being flooded.
'anonymous' who claimed responsibility for Godaddy and Facebook problems a couple of month or so ago were tweeting responsibility for Google earlier today, wouldn't surprise me if they come out and do the same again.

Not for me it wasn't. I had it from the start when the rest of smilies did while everyone was complaining about not having it then it disappeared when everyone elses started working.
