hey guys/gals

I'm wondering if anyone has experience running the two brands together. I have a 560Ti superclocked and for my next build I'm thinking of the "ASUS HD 7970 Matrix Platinum"

my question is this, can you run the 560 along side the 7970 to handle the PhysX? Either way its between the 680 or the 7970, the 7970 out performs the 680 in almost all cases. Although I don't think it can run the PhysX side of the games so having a 7970 and a 560 together would solve both issues and boost performace.. right?

Just done that this very weekend. Got one of the OcUK refurb GTX460 768MB's and installed it alongside my 7970 to run the PhysX for Batman Arkham City.

Quick version:
Plug in card.
Install nVidia drivers (I went with the 306.63 ones named in the thread below)
Install AMD drivers (may not be necessary, but I wanted to move from beta 8 to beta 11 anyway)
Run Hybridize AS ADMINISTRATOR from this thread: http://www.ngohq.com/graphic-cards/...with-latest-physx-and-geforce-285-solved.html
Delete the PhysXDevice.dll from the binary's folder in Batman
Alter settings in game to use PhysX
Play!

Worked like a trooper.

Is it worth it? Almost certainly not. Very few games use PhysX and the newer PhysX (v3) looks like it will run properly on CPU when it comes out, so a second card won't be necessary. However, I fancied giving it a try, the card only cost me £40 and I really like the two Batman games. I'm really happy with the result. Against that, the card did cost me money, it's using extra power and producing more heat (not much, most of the time it's sat idle) and is using up a PCI-E slot that meant I had to disable two USB3 ports on my motherboard.

Am I glad I did it? Yes. Will it still be in my PC in 3 months when I'm bored with Batman and play other games? Probably not. :D

Yaaaar, the conclusion is that its not really worth the heat and power, I think I can live without the PhysX for that monster 7970

Were you one of the guys that never gave a 'thanks' for the info I posted?:p

:)

For the op:

There is instructions in both the links below, but this is what you need to do:

First off you need to install the nvidia generic and regardless of which hack you need(if your lazy, just use the Hybridize one) that's detailed further below, install the nvidia driver, but when it extracts close the nvidia installer, then browse to extraction folder and delete hdmi
driver, 3d driver etc so that you are just left with the gpu driver
and the physx file-as even if you untick the other stuff, it has
installed them regardless with me in the past.

Depending on what games you play-up to Batman AC, use the physx mod up to(including the specific physx used with the working driver on the
1-05ff mod)

http://www.ngohq.com/graphic-cards/17706-hybrid-physx-mod-v1-03-v1-05ff.html

If however, you want to play B2, then the newest hybridize mod is what
you use-but, I don't know if you get the FULL physx effect as some say
it misses some of the effects due to it being a blanket fix of sorts
while specific titles have tweaked physx for said specific title, if
that makes any sense.

http://www.ngohq.com/graphic-cards/...with-latest-physx-and-geforce-285-solved.html

You should download both anyway as iirc, there is batch files to make
the gpu the default physx renderer.

In the case of B2 you need to manually set the config file to use gpu
physx after you do the hack or it will default to cpu on AMD gpus.

I may not have explained it very well guys, but it is relatively simple really.

If you install the Hybridize mod, you need to manually delete any Physx files in the exe's directory as well, but you don't have to if you use the older PhysX hacks.

Don't be rude guys and if this helps, it's nice to be polite.:p

Probably! :D I remember reading your instructions last week when I was thinking about it. I spent a while Saturday trying to get the "original" hack to work and finally stumbled onto the "newer" method I linked to and once it worked I left it the hell alone! Would've been quicker if I'd just followed your instructions in the first place.

Thanks for posting them Tommy, and I'll know in future to just listen to you in the first place and save myself some hassle. :)

Metro, GRAW and BL2 recently... only a few others. The problem is their implementation of PhysX... which is usually poor. Spend your money on a new SSD instead - or buy all NVIDIA

Which AAA blockbusters have Physx effects that are worth the expense and hassle?

Batman Arkham City was the main one for me. The differences are only minor, and certainly not game changing, but I like the bits of paper, rugs, fog, etc. I've also got Arkham Asylum, Mirrors Edge and Metro 2033 that use PhysX, but haven't tried any of those yet.

Mainly though, got it for a fun play with something new for not much cash.

What happened to those dedicated physX cards? or did i imagine them lol

The ageia cards? Nvidia bought them and PhysX.. I'm not sure if they are still supported by recent games/software anymore =( Plus its probably hard as hell to find one.

I remember wanting one back in the glory days because of CellFactor.. I managed to get it running on my 8800GT but it was unplayable.. must..look..into...that..game......again..

nVidia cut support for them a long time ago, plus they were really underpowered for the more modern stuff, they actually slowed down your game if you used it rather than just letting your main GPU handle it :D

In which case i'm glad I didn't fold and buy one. Its a good thing for Nvidia that they jumped at the opportunity before the above destroyed the reputation for "PhysX"

Might be switching to AMD soon though so I hope i'm not missing out too much!

It's not worth it if you're forced to do Hybrid PhysX, too much hassle for my taste.

It was a rhetorical question tbh :p
