My Surface for Windows RT Review

Border-less, its great for film watching, screen is super. Only small issue is the speakers are slightly quiet.

fantastic, was using the ipad Saturday night, stuck in the van for 11 hours. going this screen has so much wasted space..

role on feb for the pro version.

That annoyed me when I owned an iPad 3, probably made a lot worse due to the fact I had the white iPad.

Surface is more comfortable in the hand then iPad also, I think its the angle.

I was going to buy the RT version then realised that there is absolutely no point and may as well get the x86 pro version, that way I can install software properly and have a 1080p screen.

True. But you lose the ability to receive notifications when its asleep, have only 5 hrs battery life and you pay a lot more for it.
I'll be getting a Pro but will probably keep the RT as a secondary device for the battery life.

The other positives completely outweigh those things for me though tbh, I'll see how it goes when it gets released :)

Good news for Surface owners - Microsoft have committed to supporting the Surface RT until 11/04/2017 and Windows RT/Office RT for at least as long as that.

For comparison, the 2010 iPad has been out of support for 6 months now.

This would be the same Microsoft that promised timely Windows Phone upgrades that wouldn't be delayed by the carriers or phone manufacturers. So take that commitment with a massive pinch of salt.

Also Microsoft committing to support doesn't really mean anything - incremental OS updates maybe, but no good if people don't bother writing ARM apps.

Selectively comparing the support lifecycle policy with "untimely" updates from the Windows Phone team and partners is a stretch at best. They have a proven track record with Windows and its the conflicting view that should be taken with a "massive pinch of salt".

I think people are forgetting the Surface RT is a tablet and fighting in the same arena as the iPdad, Samsung etc.. It beats those so hard it is silly. It is almost a mini laptop.. which is what the pro will be of course. Two different devices for twoddifferent markets.

I have to say this has only get better with owning it for the last month or so, absolutely brilliant piece of kit and so much happier as an end user with it compared to my exploits with the iPad Nexus 7 etc.

Not at all. The chosen example was a recent example of how they handle emerging mobile platforms - incredibly badly. Even if they do 'support' the product, I wouldn't still expect to have a usable device in 2017 so I'm not sure why that is a bonus over competing platforms.

Getting security updates and bug fixes for the support duration is a big deal unless youre a very casual user. That is the minimum we can reasonably expect.

Ahh so you are wanting a Desktop RT version?

Yeah, or they could just add a local cache to selected folders, that would do fine!

Loving mine, had it since launch. I've used it for work on quite a few occasions. Remote desktop works perfectly, so does teamviewer

Hey, it's significantly better than android and only T-Mobile were a pain when everyone was upgraded to WP7.5, taking an extra couple of weeks. They did pretty well IMO.

Well yeah but saying a system to keep software revisions current is better than how Android handles it is like being grateful that it's raining urine from the sky because for the previous month it was just liquid turds constantly.

I think it's possible to be significantly better the Android OS upgrade model by pure chance. Google tried to save it I think last year sometime, but pretty much instantly backed down and swept it under a rug.

Typical, just before I really need it it seems the battery in my Surface no longer wants to charge. When I connect the charger the led comes on but the battery icon in Windows says connected, not charging.

Whats the Pixel quality like to the iPad, Nexus, Samsung and the rest of the tablets? I hate not knowing what I'm buying without seeing it first. I need to have a play with one.

Its not as sharp, but in term of screen quality in colours and such its the best I have seen, beside an iPad the colours look terrible on it, but you get the resolution.

The colours are in no way terrible, they're just a bit less saturated than the current iPad. The biggest drawback to the screen I've found is the digitiser in sunlight can be pretty easy to see.

I have an iPad3 and a Surface. I really thought I'd notice the lack of the resolution when using the Surface but I just don't.
