what is the benefit of over clocking?

The benefit is usually getting the same performance as a more expensive CPU (and often beyond that), just don't push it too far that it becomes unstable or overheats as there is little point in sacrificing stability for a small percentage of extra performance.

Like Orcvader says use Prime95 to test stability and Coretemp to keep an eye on temps.

Then run something like Prime95 for 15 mins or so to check if the overclock is stable while also letting the temps build up to max: http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/

P.S. 15 mins of prime will only crash if it's right on the edge of stability. You'll need to run it for 24 hours at a high priority to be really sure*. Or a few hours of Intel Burn Test with max memory.

* Although they say it's less these days since they included AVX.
