Adding this to my christmas wish list yet reviews have been mixed from it.

Some even saying the individual discs have longer versions than the 3 film package.

Anyone bought this either the individual films or the three film boxset and can give an independant review?

The Extended versions are longer, I'm a huge fan of the books and the extended edition of the films, I wish they'd have shown the extended editions in the cinema to be honest.

I want the blu ray, but I've not been hearing much good about the transfer, I'll probably pick it up at some point :)

Getting it for Christmas, can't wait. My friends and work colleagues keep saying have i got an extra couple of hours free to watch them.

I have both, although my wife has lent the DVDs out...

The Blu-Ray does look better: I'm not a picture snob by any means, but it is mostly quite obvious to me.

Unfortunately, like most films of that era, the CGI does let the side down as the HD versions make it stand out quite badly.

However, given the choice between the two version, Blu-ray, definitely.

Not sure I answered the other question, but yes, the films are exactly the same (extended DVD vs. extended Blu-Ray). Against the 'theatrical release' versions, they add a LOT more in some instances and - to be honest - if you've not read the book, I wouldn't bother: most of the detail excluded from the theatrical versions will be lost on people that aren't fans of the literary world that Tolkein created.

Got the blu ray extended set, awesome collection of awesome films :) Think I might do my yearly watch of all three films over christmas as i've got 3 days off including christmas day!

Complaints about the transfer are for the theatrical releases. Thankfully they did a much better job with the extended versions

It's held its price annoyingly well though. Seems like I've been waiting for it to drop in price for years.

One of the criticisms of the extended Blu-ray's, was the remaster of FotR. It has a greenish tint compared to the DVD. There is a comparison on Youtube. It's not so obvious when watching it without the DVD to compare to. The other being that the films are split over two discs, again. I don't know whether it would have been possible to fit RotK on to one BD, given that the film is about 4 hours long. Potentially sacrificing PQ just to have the films on a BD each would really defeat the point of having the films on BD.

As for the length of the BD extended versions compared to DVD. IMDB has RotK extended BD at 263 mins, whereas the DVD is 251 mins. FotR BD extended is about 20 mins longer. Whether that is additional footage or longer credits, or both, I don't know.

All three certainly look better than the DVD's, with RotK being the best looking.

In that case I might whack an order in tonight

I annually rewatch the extended films and usually the special features too, adore the films.

Not seen the BR versions, can't see them being much different to DVD tho.

But the little bits they take out of the movies, like the presents from the elfs etc make it much much better the cinema releases are complete crap as compared.

Extended all the way.

I've had the boxed extended trilogy on BR for a couple of years and have always been impressed - less so by the fact there is still a disk change required in the middle. I'm sure they should fit on a single disk? or maybe I'm thinking of my old DVD version.
I refused point blank to buy the theatrical releases on BR as in my eyes these are not the complete versions.
I'm assuming the latest "release" is just a re-release and no actual changes to the just over 3hr versions of the film?

They are something like 23gb upto 29gb. So would fit on a dual layer disc, Guessing they used single layer though so spread them over the two discs. Extended all the way, especially if you have read the books.

I haven't bothered to upgrade my extended edition dvds to blu-ray yet. I didn't see the point when the picture quality looked damn good anyway. A few things I've read in the reviews like the greenish tint in Fellowship, and some parts looking not too dissimilar from the dvds upscaled, kinda has put me off.

Knowing me, I'll probably end up upgrading my dvds to them after I've seen The Hobbit though.:p

Funny I was talking to the gf about the Hobbit last night as I would like to see it. She was not so sure but stated she would like to see the first LoTR to decide if she would enjoy it.

Now the question is do I watch the extended or non edition with her?

For her first time, watch the theatrical cut. The extended edition will more than likely put her off if she isn't a LOTR fan, If she enjoys it then you have her hooked and can watch the extended TTT and ROTK. There isn't really much in the extended editions that needs to be there unless you read the books then the extra scenes are very welcome :)

I watched the extra features disks on the LoTR Blu-ray extended editions a few months back, I couldn't believe how much there was - seemed like about 10 hours of extra stuff for each film!

Thanks for the advise - I think the theatrical cut would be best for a first introduction. Like most woman she does get bored quite easily ;)
