shame != fault.

If I'm standing in the middle of the city centre and you come and pull my trousers down leaving me exposed I would feel shame despite not being a fault for being put into that position.

Yes, although I'll grant you a "touche" for your presentation of the two quote together making it appear like a hypocrisy has occurred.

My scenario was being used to show that you can feel shame without being at fault, it goes no further than that. The other scenarios I was talking about are trying to relieve the radio station of ANY blame on the basis that all our actions have some kind of consequence and implying therefore no one has to think about anything they do.

And again I will ask for evidence that the phone call had any influence on the nurse's decision to take her own life.

Out of interest, what are you arguing for? That the DJs/radio station take some blame but not all?

I'm not trying to rebut you, I'm just genuinely unclear on where you're standing.

Yeah, that would do it.

All we have at the moment are 2 events which may or may not be related, but people are making the assumption that they are and baying for the blood of people who may or may not have had anything to do with the woman's death.

I'm not baying for blood, nor am I assuming anything. But that doesn't mean you have to think everything is equally likely until you have irrefutable evidence of the contrary, you can use common sense and make educated guess in the meantime.

I think the phone call and aftermath are very likely to be linked to the suicide, I think it's unlikely she was always planning to top herself that day anyway.

And I think it's highly unlikely that a simple event like this would push a mentally/emotionally stable person to kill themselves without significant other influences.

You mean, "I can't understand why everyone isn't like me"?

I can understand perfectly. Firstly she's from a "keeping up appearances" culture where the values of 'shame' are completely different to our culture. I can't understand why some tribes in Brazil want to put big rings in their mouths to deliberately deform themselves or why some tribes in Africa wear those neck elongating ring things. But I do understand that Western culture and our way of think/handling things isn't a universal truth.

Another thing is never underestimate how revered our Royal Family is in other parts of the world. It may be just 'the Royals' to us and we're used to moaning about them but in poorer parts of the world (where the nurse was from) they often treat them like gods. It's likely that she felt very honoured to be working for them and this in turn made her shame afterwards go beyond something you'd expect had it been you.

I also think it's very easy to say you'd have handled it fine and just laughed it off without actually being in that situation. Her voice was being played across the world in headline news stories, this isn't the same as the guy at Domino's who takes a prank call.

To me it's a good indication she was one of those drama queens i was going on about earlier. "Let me spend ages letting everyone know so they'll feel guilty about what they done to my fragile little ego"
