Are phone scams on eBay really that bad?

will tick that box that says i posted it correctly and let me keep the money.
You may think.. Hey thats fraud.. But wait....! The stolen paypal accounts owner will get the money back because they did a bank reversal or chargeback or w/e... So its PAYPAL that looses the money. and they can afford it.
I made £1200 on a Samsung Galaxy S3 that way...

How did you know for sure that it wasn't fake? Surely what you should've done was not send anything.

This just makes you sound as bad as the people you're complaining about.

How do i know?

Simple Paypal told me it was a fraud payment... as soon as that happens i send a fake parcel and give them tracking...

So im bad for working the system that has in the past caused me to loose hundreds? Nah mate

I'm not sure if it's the same scam: After my auction ended for my old Galaxy phone, I had a message from eBay to say that the bid from the high bidder was fraudulent and I had to go through 2nd-chance offer with the next highest bidder. Although I wasn't out of pocket, the next highest bid was considerably lower than the highest and they got my phone for quite a bargain.

That's not right. The second highest bid should be just underneath the highest bid, normally a couple of quid. The 'winner' could bid £50 more than the second place person but the winning cost wouldn't be £50 more, it would be just enough to outbid the second place guy. I can't see how your scenario could possibly happen as you describe.

How does that work though? I thought Ebay/paypal just take the money back from you even though you sent the phone (empty box)?

BS story. Being a purchaser of many phones off ebay, what you say is correct. The second bidder is only ever a few quid under the winner.

I bought and sold a lot of phones on ebay, and never had a problem. Mind you, this was before the new smartphone craze hit the market. Back in the good old days when a new handset was £100-150 max. Nowadays the phone market is aimed at those with more money then sense.

Because i "followed" the Paypal seller protection.

Still thought the seller got shafted.

Scammer steals account
Buys phone
Pays using stolen card
Seller dispatches to confirmed address
Fraud realised
Credit card chargeback to paypal
Paypal help themselves to the money from your account.

Is that not how it works?

Yes it is.
BUT if you sent item via Special delivery and Upload the tracking details to paypals claim department then they will give you the money back.

Yeah it did seem weird to me. I guess this is how a lot of eBay scare stories spread, when they aren't actually real.

I've also sold a good number of phones without any issues.

How do people feel about sales on Gumtree where the buyer wants to pay via Paypal and then you ship the phone?

I sell all my phones on gumtree and i make it very very clear that its cash on collection ie no posting anywhere and payment only by cash.

In the past 5 yrs ive been using gumtree, ive had ZERO problems. In the 2 yrs i used ebay, i had no end of problems with idiots wanting to return the phone back to me and wanting their money back etc.

Nothing but hassle but when i did use ebay i always ALWAYS sent the phones via special delivery...sure it costs more but gives me peace of mind should it get lost or a scammer tries their luck.

It's something to do with having all the persons bids removed, so the last 40-50 quid of bids "didn't happen".

I'll try selling it on Gumtree via BT or cash payment, it's also listed on AV Forums. Really not keen on eBay due to their fees and the stories that I keep hearing about.

It's a shame phone sales aren't allowed on here considering 3G tablets can be sold. I understand the reasoning but we do have a (relatively) safe area within the MM to trade.

Oh ok

What about other phones like samsung or htc?

I don't know. I think all warranties are with the retailer and also manufacturer so I'm not sure how that works with other items. I think it's a case of the buyer and seller coming to an agreement that the seller will help out in the event of any claim being made.

Yep this is what i say to my buyers off gumtree, that should they have any issues with the phone then get in touch with me and ill get it sorted for them. As long as they havent damaged it or anything.

In the past 5 yrs ive never had anyone come back to me, wanting me to get their phone repaired but then i do look after my stuff pertty well.
