I think they got Lord of the Rings spot on with what to cut and what to keep, saying that I think the extended edition of the films is the only version worth watching, not the cinema release.

I would have loved to see Tom Bombadil in there in the extended cut to be honest and a few little other things but alas, still on of the best film(s) (I treat them as one long film) ever :)

Yep i bought the LOTR extended blu ray versions and was hoping that they would have slipped the Tom Bombadil bit in there but sadly they didnt.

Is there not a 2D HFR?

Nope seems like its only 3D HFR, 3D and 2D. What sucks for me is that usually me and the missus go to the Vue cinemas in Westfield where they have the Xtreme screen but they arent showing the 3D HFR on that screen, rather they are showing it on their normal screens. The Xtreme screen is good, watched the Dark Knight rises on that over the summer and thought it was brilliant picture wise and sound wise.

Instead they've padded it out with extras that aren't (or merely alluded to) in the book, so they could get a trilogy out of it. ;)

Yeah that's partly what I was getting at - didn't want to put any spoilers in though (until there's a "plot discussion *spoiler alert* thread")

I'll probably watch it again, so will pay more attention second time around. But there were quite a few events/people in the film that aren't in the book.

I agree they have to change the script for film though, and I think PJ has done a fairly good job at telling the story - especially so for people who have seen the LoTR trilogy but not read the books (or the Hobbit book).

Whilst I don't really agree with padding out films, I love Hobbit/LoTR so more screentime* is good IMO. :)

* Particularly Galadriel. :cool:

What future of 3D? It has been around for a very long time and each time it has been just a phase.

I agree that the higher frames are the way cinema will go, but I don't think it will be in 3D.

Alsooooo; just because films are being made in 3D isn't a reflection of the feelings of the audience, 3D costs more and creates more revenue.

What have been people's favourite parts?

I adore and love it all, but I really enjoyed the 'Out of the frying pan' 'In to the fire' :D

HFR and 3D are tied in....that's the plan.2D HFR will happen but isn't a priority.

You say 3D films are being made but don't reflect the feelings of the audience.... you're wrong because they do just that. If the cost to earning ratio didn't favour 3D the films wouldn't get made in 3D.

Also, the previous 'phases' of 3D were short-lived due to issues with costs for second projector's and camera-rigs were difficult to work with. These issues are resolved.

Anyway,we'll have this discussion again in 5 years and you'll still tell me how 3D is a failure. :p

If I've learnt anything from gaming it's to never read reviews of something you want to see/play before seeing it yourself. Just go watch and make your own mind up is my advice :).
Agree completely. I read the Telegraph review and like the Forbes review think that some of these reviewers either make it up (which I've heard is actually the case a lot of the time) or think that as a reviewer to actually like a film that the general public will mostly love undermines them, so they just **** it off anyway. It's obvious that PJ adores the books and it shows in the movies...

Absolutely loved it, certainly enjoyed it more than any of the LOTR films.

3D was brilliantly done, only surpassed by Avatar, and on the IMAX screen it was just gorgeous.

Saw it this afternoon in 3D (not HFR).

1) At 24fps, I felt things seemed to blur a lot more than other normal 3D and 2D films during sweeping pans and fast motion.
2) I felt the 3D was not particularly impressive and didn't add anything to the film. I even took my glasses off a couple of times, and I could have quite easily watched it without them, the dual image was so slight.
There were a couple of points when things came out towards the viewer, but because of point 1 above, it was just a blurry mess coming at me.
3) Now the actual film itself was brilliant. I have not read the book, but it was fun to see so many small things link it into LOTR like characters related to LOTR characters and such, and there was a good balance of character introduction and action sequences.
4) My biggest worry going in was Martin Freeman. Having seen Ali G last night, I just worried he would be too comical for something like this. In the end he was pretty good.

I don't know if I will, but if I go and see it again, it will be the 2D and save myself a couple of quid.

The 48 fps takes getting used to... To me it makes the action sequences and landscape pans seem very fast... Almost to the point where it looks sped up!

I wasn't too fussed about the 3D aspect either... It was just as if they decided to put in some 3D "shizzle" because they could and it annoys me!

As for the film... I might be the first one here to say this but I thought it was a bit "meh!" to be honest. I was really looking forward to it but I still think the LotR series is leaps and bounds ahead! HOWEVER! This is only the first film and I hope that it becomes darker as the films progress just like LotR did!

Edit: One final thing... There were also specific bits in the film I thought were a bit "meh!" as if they should not have been part of the theatrical release and maybe should have been reserved for the extended edition DVD/BR...

Just my 2p : )

Bit of a random question but does anyone know if Odeon Guest Passes are valid for any Odeon or just the cinema they came from? I had a complaint at the Bayswater one and eventually got free tickets out of them. The email I got sent says
Please find guest passes as promised for you to return to Odeon Whiteleys on another date
but the tickets themselves don't actually say anything on them. They are barcoded though...

Loved it. With HFR the 3D wasn't headache inducing, which I appreciated. It was also super sharp, although the interior shots did look properly fake. The outdoor and CGI stuff was rather impressive though.
