Upgrade or new rig?

I think I'll try to flip it. But then I'll need to apply a new layer of thermal paste and remove the "old" one, right? Furthermore. The K2 Mount Doom middle fan is constantly "hitting" something, which means it'll get damaged if I don't unplug it. Any solution to that or suggestion towards what it might be? I've assembled it as instructed by the manual and double checked with youtube videos. I guess I could run with only 1 of the fans, but reviews and other people commenting on their K2 Mount Doom say that they've chosen the middle fan, if they only run with 1. So I'd really like to get that fan sorted.

Thanks in advance.

I also had a similair problem with an Alpenfohn fan, (120mm wingboost). The blades on some seem to protrude slightly prouder than other fans. I was using it on a prolimatech super mega cooler and the blades hit the fan clips. Now on a k2, thankfully both fans on it are ok. Could indeed be a fault with the fan, do you have another fan to hand that you could use till you perhaps get the other replaced. Any standard 120mm fan with open corners like the k2 fans should be fine. Youll need an open corner fan so the clip can grab the screw hole on the fan.

Thread i posted about it here mate.

Yes ideally the cooler should blow hot air towards the rear, it doesn't look like you have high profile ram heatsink so it should fit well. And yes you need fresh thermal paste after each heatsink removal. Use alcohol wipes or something similar to completely remove old paste.

Thanks, but damn. So you solved it by buying different fans? Quite a shame, to have to buy new fans, when I just bought this cooler. Is it considered a faulty item due to this? Cause I'd rather return it and get a refund and try another CPU cooler than have to change parts on a brand new one.

Alpenfohn may just replace the fan, im still using the alpenfohn fans, i already had two of the blue bladed wingboost 120's, then the two that came with the k2. However, due to my blue colour scheme, i use one of the blue bladed wingboosts on the front of the k2.

Hey guys.

So I got the overclocking going, and ended up with 470 x 8.5 = 4.0GHz.

I reckon I can go higher without trouble, but figured that since it's my first OC, I'd take one thing at a time and give these settings some time and then maybe adjust more.

So with my new 7950 and an E8500 at 4.0GHz I figured I'd be set for some gaming after numerous stress tests (all of which show no problems, what so ever).
Problem is; I still lag/get stutters. My FPS is constantly above 50, close to 75 most of the time, actually, except for when I witness explotions and what not in BF3. Yet it still feels "laggy". I guess it must be the OC'ing/my fault. I just have no idea what is wrong.

I did a 3DMark test and got these results:

My OCCT looks like this:

- I reckon the memmory usage looks messed up, but I'm not sure :S

And LinX goes through every time with no errors.

I am not sure how to read Prime95. I start it, and three box' / consoles appear within the program window. Two state "Pass=1" and one says that the actual test is commencing. But nothing happens. The problem doesn't freeze, I can close it, minimize etc. and change settings for the test. But no actual results seem to appear. Is it me or Prime95 messing up? :P

Furthermore, core temperature does not exceed 60 degrees celcius when stress testing, which I read was more than acceptable. Some guides say one can go above 70 degree celcius as long as it's only when the CPU is working at a 100% in a stress test.

Once again, I thank you all for your time and help.

Hmm, you could try a fresh install of windows? Have you updated to the latest drivers (since new gpu), and cleaned the old ones away with DriverSweeper?

You should be able to play nice and smooth with that hardware and overclock I'd of thought, though I guess it depends which graphics settings you are also setting :)

Off Topic: Once again, it's insane how quickly you guys reply. Thanks a lot.

Never heard of DriverSweeper before. It's my first and only game rig, and first time I replace something. So good to know :P Tried it. There was a lot of NVIDIA drivers hidden/still installed. Got rid of those, but that presented me with a new problem. Now I got a BSOD after playing for approx. 5 minutes. It says "DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_EQUAL_OR_SAME_VALUE" (or the like, dissapeared before I could read it). Any idea as to what that could be? Ordered a Crucial M4 SSD together with some Thermal Paste ('cause I'll flip my new CPU heatsink). So I'll have to do a clean W7 install on that. Might change things.

Try playing BF3 on default settings in the game and see how you go.

Settings wise, I've always just run BF3 on the lowest possible settings. Tried defaulting/resetting. Lowers my FPS, due to the increase of some settings. So I'm at a stable 50ish FPS now. Seems to have lowered/decreased the amount of stutters. But I still feel them. Might be me, wanting to see them. Can't say for sure, before I've had my mate over and try it. But nothing jumps out on the OCCT results or 3DMark results above? My OC looks successful to you guys? :)

(Hope it's okay I reuse this topic rather than spam in a new one.)

New problems have arisen. Unfortunately.
I got my SSD and installed W8 (to try it out, I get it for free from my university through Microsoft Dreamspark). This resulted in red screens and reboots. Just like BSOD, no text though. I googled this and found that it was either due to a defect GPU or the OS. Since the GPU is brand new, I hoped for it to be the OS and decided to roll back to W7 and see if the RSOD disappeared. Unfortunately, I can't boot my PC now. No BIOS, nothing. When I pull out my 12V 4-pin connector on the MB, nothing changes. Fans still run and MB lights are on. So I suspect the fault is said plug a.k.a the PSU. Can anyone confirm this or supply an alternate way of testing/diagnosticing the troublemaker? And before I rush out and buy a new PSU to get this sorted, could this be related to my recent overclock? Or is it just bad timing that my PSU blows out the same week I overclocked my CPU :S ?

Thanks in advance and a merry christmas to you all.

I've searched and searched in rules, and I couldn't find anything on "BUMPING" posts. So I hope I don't offend anyone or break any rules.

I really need to know whether this is my PSU so I can go and get one ASAP. I've been searching around and the difference I see on PSU's are ATX, SFX and EPS. Not sure which I need but I looked at the Corsair Enthusiast Series TX750W V2.

Eventhough my current PSU is a Corsair (and that broke), I've only heard good things about Corsair. What I can read on most build help topics are people suggesting "PC Power & Cooling Silencer Mk III Series" but they don't come in a 750W edition.

Suggestions/advice is much appreciated.

The V2 is an excellent Psu, I say this because I have it and it has been faultless. If you do buy it, then if your Psu is at fault RMA it, providing it still has some warranty left.

Thanks for the hint on the RMA. I'm pursuing that as we speak. Speedy service, them Corsair.

One question still stands, though; Does my PSU breaking have anything to do with my overclock? I reckon the MB or CPU should suffer from bad overclocking, but I'm not sure.
